Democrats Need To Pick a Leader. Now.The fragmented party needs a public face of unified opposition to Trump. Elizabeth Warren is the clear choice.
BY JEET HEER December 5, 2016
Its not just Warrens considerable skills as a public messenger that make her the logical choice to take a newly created role leading the opposition Democrats at this critical moment. She has populist and anti-Wall Street credentials, making her well-positioned to call Trumps bluff as he enacts a plutocratic agenda and betrays the promises he made to his working-class base.
Politically, shes situated in the middle between Sanders and Schumer. Shes a party member in good standing (unlike Sanders), but not a centrist with Wall Street ties (like Schumer). She has credentials both as a Democrat (which Sanders lacks) and as a fighter (which Schumer lacks).
With her sharp, relentless, and often funny criticism of Trump, Warren has already stepped up to the plate as the partys most stalwart voice. If the Democrats could invent a way to formalize her role, it would make her all the more effective.

(115,683 posts)Elizabeth Warren would be perfect to try to repair the party. She doesn't have to run for president in 2020; she can work on cleaning up the mess while a good candidate emerges. I can't think who that would be, though.

(6,496 posts)We do need some in the interim, but they need to groom someone younger to take over. I think the dems need to work on getting young people into the party more. They need to think about ways they can do that. I know there are probably lots of good, smart young people could do a good job, but they are struggling with bills and supporting families. Democrats are the party of the middle and lower class and these people work all the time just to get by. There are tons of people out there, but how can the party give them a pathway to get involved that would not be so financially risky for them? Most of our dem leaders are past retirement age because that is when most of us are financially secure enough to become involved and also their children are all grown. The dems would be a more attractive party if we start running candidates in 30's and 40's.

Sit back, pay attention, chime in with opinion and research. In many ways, we jumped on the Obama bandwagon too quickly. But we can't change the past.
I'm looking forward to who will step forward to grab the party by the soul and raise it up.

(68,868 posts)Voters look to punish and blame, so we do best by avoiding making ourselves a target.
By all means we should engage in scorched earth, guerrilla tactics against Trump and the Congressional Republicans. But we don't want a face of the party until we have a nominee in 2020.

(10,005 posts)leadership can be filled by plenty of good people, with great ideas in planning and organization..
Running for office is an art and not necessary a good behind the scene type person.
