Trump's Taiwan Call Intentionally Provocative & Premeditated. Who Ultimately Benefits?

Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2010

The following quotes concerning Trump, Taiwan and China indicate he and his team intentionally are provoking China and thus engaging in a form of diplomacy that may lead to confrontation in one form or another. Trump has said he has no problem with a trade war with China.

Useful snippets included here are the fact Trump owes a billion dollars to the Bank of China (which is essentially owned by China) and that he had people in Taiwan, perhaps to look into opening hotels there or for some other reason. He had people going to Taiwan in November and while it's reported they were discussing a hotel, there may well have been something else going on. We can't take anything on its face with Trump.

IMO, Democrats need to call out Trump on his crude diplomacy. While Clinton talked about dealing with China’s currency manipulation and the possibility of tariffs she wouldn’t go about doing things over Twitter and outright insults to Chinese authority. International relations are not professional wrestling or an edited reality show.

Being unnecessarily adversarial with China also has implications beyond China and Taiwan. Russia and China might find common cause in breaking apart NATO. And while Trump and his team seem willing to play chicken with NATO, it’s hard to imagine Trump or any of his Flying Monkeys outwitting Putin/Russia or China or coming up with anything that will lead to global stability. Russia and China are playing a long game. Trump is interested in the adrenaline rush of the next deal in front of him.

Donald Trump's Call With Taiwan President Was No Surprise: Official

BEIJING — A phone call between Donald Trump and Taiwan's leader that risks damaging relations between the U.S. and China was pre-arranged, a top Taiwanese official told NBC News on Saturday.

Trump’s Taiwan phone call was long planned, say people who were involved

Donald Trump’s protocol-breaking telephone call with Taiwan’s leader was an intentionally provocative move that establishes the incoming president as a break with the past, according to interviews with people involved in the planning.

The historic communication — the first between leaders of the United States and Taiwan since 1979 — was the product of months of quiet preparations and deliberations among Trump’s advisers about a new strategy for engagement with Taiwan that began even before he became the Republican presidential nominee, according to people involved in or briefed on the talks.

The call also reflects the views of hard-line advisers urging Trump to take a tough opening line with China, said others familiar with the months of discussion about Taiwan and China.

Trump and his advisers have sought to publicly portray the call the president-elect took from Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on Friday as a routine congratulatory call. Trump noted on Twitter that she placed the call.

Trump owes a billion to Bank of China:
"For example, an office building on Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan, of which Mr. Trump is part owner, carries a $950 million loan. Among the lenders: the Bank of China, one of the largest banks in a country that Mr. Trump has railed against as an economic foe of the United States, and Goldman Sachs..."

Trump representative visited Taiwan in November:
Newspapers in Taiwan reported last month that a Trump Organization representative had visited the country, expressing interest in perhaps developing a hotel project adjacent to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, which is undergoing a major expansion. The mayor of Taoyuan, Cheng Wen-tsan, was quoted as confirming that visit.
