America, love it or leave it people must have felt. Of course, those people a're all despising "Merika," along with you seemingly, these days. Maybe there's something in Merikan air that makes us so much worse than the rest of humanity.

To be fair, it's a problem all over the planet, not just here.

went away it would just be replaced with something else very similar. A lot of people NEED religion. Wishing we didn't have it is about as useful as wishing all black and brown people cleansed from our planet.

And bigotry against religious people, denying all good from religion, pretending the worst are typical of all, is just as pernicious and wrong as bigotry between 2 religions or based on skin color.

For one, you're doing that thing where someone starts arguing against an imaginary opponent, "refuting" several points I haven't even brought up and statements I haven't made, here.

Okay, beyond that;

if it went away it would just be replaced with something else very similar. - says who? Next, define "went away".

Now, I happen to believe that human beings are capable of self-updating the operating systems with which they run their brains to a rather incredible degree. There are people walking around on this planet with "software" in their heads which was essentially written 2-3000 years ago, for nomadic goat herding civilizations. Not surprisingly, they find it staggeringly ineffective, or worse, to function in 21st century reality.

People can't outgrow superstition? Baloney. Slavery was around for millennia (endorsed by the Bible, even) and now it's largely gone.

And that's the bottom line, here, to my mind- not "religion is bad" or "religion is good"; religion, as a word or concept, is too broad and ill-defined to make blanket statements about, in the first place. I'm more concerned with the usefulness of paradigms, belief systems, or semantic maps via which we view reality.

And it is indisputable, to my mind, that these horribly outdated reality-maps passed down to us from the major monotheistic faiths have laid some seriously fucked-up head trips on a large number of people, around sexuality. That seems flat-out obvious and inarguable, from my perspective.

If this happened, it was back in the 1940s. Not exactly the dark ages, but any physician doing this now would run a real risk of going to prison, and of course the parents would have their child taken away if it were discovered. Such as while the child was being examined by another physician.

Interesting that the specific sect of Christianity wasn't named. It should have been since most would not do this. Nor would by far most physicians of those days.

Genital mutilation is considered an atrocity in not only in all advanced nations but most of the rest of the world as well, including large portions of Muslim nations.

something of a fad.

I hear tell that chastity belts have enjoyed a bit of a comeback (so to speak) among some urban kinksters but at least now it's all about consent.
