Trump supporter who punched protester at rally apologizes http://hill.cm/PCrZFh1

CBS Raleigh, North Carolina affiliate WNCN-TV reports 79-year-old John Franklin McGraw, of Linden, pleaded no contest on Wednesday to misdemeanor charges of assault and battery and disorderly conduct. A judge also ordered McGraw to pay $180 in court costs and a $250 fine.

McGraw apologized for his actions, and Judge Tal Baggett told him to talk to Jones. The two men spoke, shook hands and hugged, and people in the courtroom applauded.

McGraw said he and Jones were both caught up in a “political mess.”

Jones accepted his apology and the two then hugged and agreed to work together to heal the country.

“It just felt good being able to shake his hand … and face him,” Jones said.

...I much prefer this to the violence, though.

Good on Rakeem, as well, for being receptive to this, however grudging McGraw was about it.

You know what you did and I know what I did is not an apology.

You punched Jones in the face for no reason.

You didn't even have the balls to apologize.

...I'll say it to you, uponit7771.

This was an incident which fueled a lot of anger and, in some cases, fear, generated from the incitement of violence by Trump, on down to his supporters who made not-so-veiled threats against their political rivals like McGraw did after he assaulted Mr. Jones.

It just amped up, and it was a symbol and reminder of the outrageous Trump campaign (and what's to come), months and months of lurid and denigrating back and forth between supporters and defenders. That stirring of violence and acrimony coming from Trump is unacceptable, and you wonder just what's going to happen if people completely lose their heads over the deliberate inflaming of tensions, mistrust, and anxiety among us.

To that end, I wholeheartedly welcome this result between these two men, whatever its shortcomings, because it is the opposite of the resentment and divisiveness Trump is trying to stir up among us.
