MARRAKESH, Morocco President-elect Donald Trumps kind words and admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin seem painfully naive. Moscows interference in the U.S. presidential elections makes their bromance even more unnerving. Yet Trumps pro-Russian posture is neither unprecedented nor likely to last very long.
Kurt Volker and I were on one of those night-owl sessions on Thursday at the German Marshall Funds Atlantic Dialogues conference in Marrakesh, Morocco, where great stuff is said because it is off the record. But the former U.S. ambassador to NATO and current executive director of the McCain Institute for International Leadership at Arizona State University gave such a simple explanation of the relationship between the United States and Russia that I asked him if he would tell me on the record. Volker obliged.
The second thing is that every president has done this primarily because they think it was their predecessor that screwed things up. So they think, Well, I can do a better job. I can handle this. I know these people. I can make this work. And it turns out that the problem isnt actually their predecessor. The problem is the Russians.

(17,865 posts)Still I see it playing out the way he outlines. Right now I keep hearing how Iran is an ally of Russia so we will be militarily hands off with them. I don't see that situation holding. An Iranian war that disrupts oil production in Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the other Arab oil producing countries will be a boon to Russia. It will also expend our blood and treasure in another costly war, and fragment our country even further - all pluses for the Russians.
It might not happen this term, but I will laugh my head off when Russia nationalizes the Exxon investment in their country. Good luck getting anyone to back their property rights after what is to come.

This is all going to end very badly. For him, certainly. For us, almost certainly.
