Even before the president-elect landed, local controversy already had flared: On Thursday, the administration of Mayor Sandy Stimpson proudly proclaimed that decorations at the stadium included a 50-foot-tall Christmas tree. Stimpson's chief of staff, Colby Cooper, tweeted that the city's team "did the impossible" getting the tree into position in time.

As complaints of some city residents soon revealed, doing the impossible had involved cutting the tree from a public park in the city. "A Christmas Tree was needed and the City provided it," Cooper said.
