just a convenient deflection for Repugs to take the spotlight away from them stealing enough votes in certain key states to get Trump the electoral votes needed to get over 270?
Sure Russia & Putin were successful in influencing this election - but my feeling is that the knockout punch was the Repugs stealing votes.
Maybe Obama is in the process of gathering info on Repugs actions in this election as well as gathering more info on the Russians.
In order for the American People to have confidence in future elections we need to explore both the hacking issue as well as the voter suppression and the electronic voting machines that can be easily manipulated with lack of a paper trail.
We have these major presidential elections every 4 years. There's enough time in between these elections for all states to shake down their machinery and correct all issues before the next election. In my opinion it is a travesty that on election day we run into all sorts of problems - when all of these problems could have and should have been addressed before the election.
After this election we've learned of many machine malfunctions and questionable issues connected with miscounting, vote changing, etc. This election is over and is now history - but what are we doing now going forward to prevent these same things from happening four years from now.

(146,307 posts)To change how they are run, each state's legislature must make laws that regulate them fairly.
So, what to do? Elect people to your state's legislature who will pass those laws and reform the election process.
Elections are a state-by-state issue. If your state does it wrong, elect people in your state who will change things.
Pretty simple, huh? And that's what we can do, and that's the only thing we can do, really.

(146,307 posts)government works. I'm not sure where the fault lies in that, though, really. I find it especially surprising that, on an active political discussion forum, so many people lack an understanding of their own government. It complicates many discussions. It's probably also why turnout is so low in non-presidential election years.

You really have to have some interest in government to want to learn and remember that stuff. Most people, I'm sorry to say, don't seem to have much interest.

(15,438 posts)order to 'throw the bums out' in 2018 is naive. Since gutting the VRA, hundreds of thousands of voters have been purged or refused at the polling places - among other voter suppression acts. Many have received "provisional ballots" that aren't even counted before the the media blasts with BREAKING NEWS that a Republican, again, has won.
You are thinking from a position of fairness. I commend you for that. But we've seen that Republicans don't do fair in the game of gaining power and keeping it. They lie, steal, and cheat, and no one can win from cheaters. That is a fact.

Neither thinks voting machine hacking occurred.

(33,956 posts)What we have seen in the last few years is that they just keep slamming us with outrages and there is a point that people lose interest and it becomes a punch line--despite the egregious offensive nature.
I just think they reached into their dirty bag of tricks and unleashed every vile thing....too many things for us to go after all at once without looking like conspiracy theorists.
It worked.

Agree with your post. It's crazy.

(28,859 posts)Even more important is that the Dems are,
once again, sitting back and letting this happen.

(1,325 posts)Let's take a look at Michigan:
Trump wins with ~ 10,000 more votes. The crosscheck block purged ~ 450,000 votes. 75,000 votes in the Detroit area weren't even counted. Not even counted!
And now we're going after each other and crying about outside issues. Bernie cost us the election, the media was all in for tRump, Putin hacked and stole the election, the friggin' FBI ruined our chances. All seem plausible, but the fact remains there were enough votes cast to defeat tRump.
And yet - the Democrats still don't know how to fight for these votes. Think we've done all we can? Imagine if the tables were turned and the republicans knew they had a majority of the votes, yet these votes were being blocked by the democrats? They would be having a shit-fit and the teams of lawyers attacking the state halls would be vast. The other side wouldn't put up with this kind of bullshit for a nano-second if the democrats were doing it to them.
Bottom line - HRC not only won the popular count, she won the election too. And just like 2000 and 2004, the DNC and the rest of our feckless spineless leadership line up in a circular firing squad and shoot each other.
Hillary didn't lose - this election was stolen. The 5th time in my life the repukes have stolen the Presidency - Nixon, Reagan, Bush (twice) and now STFU Donnie. Sometimes it's goddamned hard to be a democrat. I expect to get crapped on by the other side, but like Charlie Brown, we keep trying to kick that football to no avail; only to find out that Lucy is a democrat.

(31,516 posts)any evidence that the votes themselves were hacked. I believe there were several factors that led to DT's win and each of those needs to be considered so they can be countered.
What really disturbs me is the Republican reaction to the Russian hacking. They act like it's a "sour grapes" excuse by Democrats for losing the election instead of treating it with the attention it deserves. This is not exclusively a Democratic party problem, it's an American problem and is a threat to free and fair elections, which are the bedrock of our form of government.
I don't understand their reluctance to investigate. The election won't be overturned, but we need to know what happened so we can avoid this type of foreign intervention in future elections.
