We were both leaving the same medical building and he was escorting his wife, who was wearing a burqa. I was on crutches so he kindly held the door for me. I thanked them and said "As-Salam-u-Alaikum" as best as I could. He smiled and returned the greeting, both of us nodding our heads in friendship. His wife looked at me briefly with relief and kindness.
In the spirit of the Season - let there be peace on Earth and let it begin with me.

(877 posts)Sorry, didn't know the difference until you all pointed it out. I did see her eyes and that was it - just the slit for the eyes but that was enough to see terror and concern that I might confront in a negative way.
Thanks!

How did you look briefly through a slit and in that brief moment detected terror and concern from a woman who just happened to be leaving a doctor's office (while knowing with certainty that the terror was bred from her religious beliefs)? It seems a little presumptuous, but that's just me.

(2,068 posts)The encounter notoriety may not be that a possibly muslim person held the door for you, but that anyone held the door in today's world. Should not take the "sprit of the season" to hold the door or thank someone for doing it - ethnicity notwithstanding.
