Brown thinks it’s probable that Trump uses both UV beds and faux tanner in tandem, since he has both the white circles and hyper-pigmentation characteristic of tanning beds, as well as the streakiness characteristic of faux tanning products.

“When you use fake tanner, it’s very easy for the skin to go orange,” Brown told me. “When I tan people for red carpets, I have to adjust the color specifically for [the] lights, so that it doesn’t reflect too much orange.” When Trump stands at podiums or in front of cameras, Brown says the light is reflecting the orange undertones of a bad faux tan, which haven’t been properly adjusted for the high-intensity lighting of televised speeches or camera flashes.

Cameron Rokhsar, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, agrees with the hypothesis that Trump uses self-tanner, perhaps overzealously. “The active ingredient in sunless tanners and creams is dihydroxyacetone, and that often times gives an orange hue to the skin,” he told me.
