The incident occurred on the Breitscheidplatz square, near the location of Berlin's iconic Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church along the Kurfürstendamm shopping mile. Nine people are reported to have died as a result of the attack; however, unconfirmed reports state that there may be more fatalities. Up to 50 people have been reported as injured.
The police are treating the incident as an apparent terror attack. The driver of the truck has now been arrested after fleeing the scene earlier. A person in the passenger seat was reportedly killed. The police have asked the public to cooperate with the investigation.

(111,255 posts)Hotels in the area are on lockdown and people urged to stay home instead of going rubbernecking. Truck is of Polish registration, owner was contacted and "thinks" it might have been hijacked (yes, just that hinky).
