enter the domain name at whois.net and see who owns it. If it's registered to a company in China, Russia or elsewhere, when the website displays the company is located in Arlington VA, that's a clear sign something isn't right.

Or if you think a website is a fake version of a real one, enter the domain name of the real one in another browser page in the address bar and see what comes up.

To be a little safer on the web, there is a plug-in called WOT, or Web of Trust, that displays little discs next to a website in google. Green is considered safe, yellow is questionable, go there at your own risk, and Red, which is Danger, danger! Damage alert! I know this plug in is available for Firefox, and possibly Safari, but I don't know about the others. May be available in Google Chrome. I rely on that plug-in faithfully.
