that Rump is not fulfilling his campaign promises to them.

(72 posts)It's a repeating pattern. These people aren't smart enough to know any better. Which goes back to not wasting time trying to convert these types. Never gonna happen.

(16,423 posts)They are already making up excuses why bringing in billionaires means "draining the swamp".
Some voted for him because they support his dark side.
They will be angry.
Some voted for him because they believed his optimistic promises.
They will be angry.
Some voted for him just out of spite against the overall political system.
They will stay loyal to him, because all they want in return for their loyalty is a target for their hatred.

(5,591 posts)The ignorance is too ingrained. The Stupid, too deep.
For those who normally have what could pass for intelligence but is really love of "power" and money over humanity and compassion, the shame of what they have enabled will probably keep them silent.
And those who knew exactly what they were voting for will welcome the destruction from hate-filled hearts.

(24,396 posts)figure out that their beliefs are based entirely on make believe?
95% of them will double down on the make believe. 4% will pretend that they continue to believe. Maybe 1% will decide to change their life view.
I'm guessing the percentages are about the same when it comes to political beliefs, especially when those beliefs - like religion - are based on make believe.

(654 posts)is a really good assessment of how it all works, no one wants to be wrong with a belief system. Many will cling to it for no reason other than it's comfortable and familiar even if it's based on fantasy as you suggest.

(49,533 posts)I am reminded of one clear example of this during the campaign.
Recall that the GOP was the party of WAR in 2003. Iraq, Iraq, Iraq. Gotta get Saddam. Gotta stop his WMD program. Anyone who questioned the war was a traitor. And so on. All the Trumpsters were on board with that.
Fast forward to 2016 and one of the attacks on Clinton was the fact that she had voted for the Iraq War - and Trump's base of fools lapped it right up. Cheered when he said (falsely of course) that he had always opposed it.
Right there - night and day. The Iraq War went from being our solemn patriotic duty to support, to something that was an albatross around the neck of the candidate of the other party. Yet I guarantee you not one Trumpster had a moment of cognitive dissonance. They repeat what they are told. Thinking not only NOT required, it's actively suppressed.

Understood in those terms, the idea that Trumpism is populist seems misplaced. Populism is a belief in the right of ordinary people, rather than political insiders, to rule. Trumpism, by contrast, operates on the presumption that ordinary people arent going to get any chance to rule no matter what they do, so they might as well piss off the political insiders using the only tool left available to them: the vote.
While many commentators say Trump will have to bring back jobs or vibrancy to places like the Rust Belt if he wants to continue to have the support of people who voted for him, Thompsons account suggests otherwise. Many if not most Trump supporters long ago gave up on the idea that any politician, even someone like Trump, can change the direction the wind is blowing. Even if he fails to bring back the jobs, Trump can maintain loyalty in another way: As long as he continues to offend and irritate elites, and as long as he refuses to play by certain rules of decorumheaven forfend, the president-elect says ill-conceived things on Twitter!Trump will still command loyalty. Its the ethic, not the policy, that matters most.

(6,344 posts)I helped a trump supporter yesterday learn some things they did not know. The man I was talking with got real quiet and then said, "I didn't know." He was visibly altered by the knowledge. Topic: EPA disaster & that his hated ObamaCare was not fixed because of repubs refusal to play nice.
