tRump goes to DEFCON 2 - think there is a secret plan B to keep his finger off the button?

With tRump having access to the nuclear codes, I can't fathom there is not some secret GOP cabal in place to intercede if he has a major tantrum over an insulting tweet from a foreign nation.

Even those fucks who elected the fascist, don't want to go nuclear and destroy the planet.

He has already demonstrated to be a psychologically unstable individual. I imagine someone in the military chain of command is (secretely) prepared to intercede vs allowing a crazy man to start a war.

You think?

of a nuclear war. I say that for two reasons. One part of the group is looking for an armageddon to complete their religious beliefs and the other part of the group think we could actually win a nuclear war.

The nuclear codes allow the use of the nuclear weapons and their arming, but it is up to others in the chain of command to transmit and carry out the orders.

The training is centered around QUICKLY following the orders of the President.

The Secretary of Defense (obviously nominated by the President) is supposed to confirm the order, so that's the "safeguard" in place. Unfortunately, the order from the President still stands if the SoD doesn't respond.

I'm not sure exactly how it should be changed, but it needs changed!

I don't know what the point of no return is, but there is a point. That is, once the order is given - they will launch the missiles.

I believe the president must decide in a matter of minutes if he "believes" we are under attack.

But what if the president is delusional?

We need more eyes on it. It's crazy to ultimately rely on one person for such a decision while personnel are mostly tested to ensure they have the mental make-up to quickly comply with such orders.

I hope the Russians love their children too. Let's hope Republicons love their children too. At this moment I'm not so sure. Goebbels kids come to mind. It doesn't end well if you go that way.

"Helga Susanne Goebbels (1 Sept. 1932--1 May 1945), eldest child of Progaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels and his wife, Magda. Helga was a Daddy's girl and Hitler's favorite. With her long, dark hair and blue eyes, she was the prettiest of the girls. Helga's temperament was such that Magda said she'd shoot an unfaithful husband. There's evidence Helga struggled against taking the poison that killed her. She was 4 months shy of her 13th birthday when she died."

DEFCON 5 is the normal, lowest state of readiness.

The President does have unilateral nuclear release authority, BUT barring an immediate crisis it is expected SECDEF and perhaps others will concur with such an order. Such concurrence is not required but the lack would raise red flags with the military, who despite what some may believe, are not suicidal morons.

I hope you're right about others having to concur.

It's unimaginable that we actually have to worry about an unstable president, but in this case reality is stranger than fiction.

Reminds me of a movie....

It drives me crazy when people say DEFCON 5 when they really mean 2 or 1. I thought that we were 2 during my time of service during the Yom Kippur (I think) war. but officially it was 3. The way we felt it was at least 2.5.

Trump will push the buttons a few times with his tiny little thumbs, there will be ominous lights and noises, but nothing will happen. Next day it will all be forgotten.

I'm more worried about Putin's goons.

They might cut off Trump's tiny twittering thumbs, and then it will be war. Too many "our President right or wrong" in the U.S.A..

These people are like suicidal terrorists who want to die and take lots of people with them.

All the money in the world doesn't make them happy.

Their existence has a spiritual void/lack of meaning at its core. So they take their emptiness out on the rest of us.

Some on the Far Right DO want to hasten us all along on the Road to the Apocalypse.

When Tricky Dick was having his nightly "conversations" with Mr. Johnny Walker Red (or Black), the Secretary of Defense at the time instructed the officer in charge of carrying the Nuclear "Football" that if Nixon tried to use the nukes, the officer was to personally call him first to validate the need to launch was legit.

I think General Mattes (tRump's pick for SecDef) will have a similar conversation with the current officer in charge of the "Football" right after OV takes the oath.
