Son's broken arm: Bill Huizenga says people must be responsible for own health care costs post-ACA

http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2016/12/sons_broken_arm_bill_huizenga.html

While the Affordable Care Act put in place under President Obama is credited with giving 20 million Americans health insurance, it has been criticized for driving up insurance rates and adding regulations that interfere with the doctor-patient relationship.

President-elect Donald Trump and Republican leaders are eager to begin "repealing and replacing" the sweeping healthcare law. After blasting the ACA throughout his campaign, Trump now says he wants to keep provisions that prevent insurance companies from denying policies based on pre-existing conditions, and allow children up to the age of 26 to remain on their parents' policies. He still wants to do away with the mandate requiring everyone to have health insurance.

"There's definitely going to be changes in the health care delivery system," said U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland. "We can't just continue to squeeze providers to say this is how we are going to save money. It's forcing health care providers ... into some very different actions that in most people's opinion is unhealthy."

Instead, Huizenga says more responsibility needs to shift to the shoulders of patients to reduce costs. One way to do that is having them pay a bigger share of their medical expenses by increasing their insurance deductibles and incentivizing them to use HSAs, health savings accounts, to sock away pre-tax money to pay medical bills.

it's nakedly obvious and disingenuous to argue this as "self reliance" in the public interest. If health care becomes a universal right/ public service like schools, police and fire, and not a "consumer" market product to be bought, sold, invested and profited on, we'd have a good health care system.. Working towards that goal should be a solid DEM platform. ACA wasn't perfect, but given the invested interests and political climate, it was a good step with some smart interlocking provisions and it moved us in the right direction. I fear we will begin this slide back to "self reliance" solutions, but now with 20 million more insured that could be harmed, there will be a lot of public resistance to any changes that reduce benefits/increase cost. I'm sure Trump and the Pukes haven't a clue how to develop an alternative that would not do both.

We need fighters on ACA or it will go away. It's not enough to fight just for Medicare, if they zap ACA Medicare is next
