Arizona Governor Welcomes Uber Fleet of Self-Driving Cars

PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) - Uber’s self-driving cars are coming soon to a road near you.

The ride-hailing company made the announcement Thursday, much to the delight of Gov. Doug Ducey.

"Arizona welcomes Uber self-driving cars with open arms and wide open roads,” he said after the announcement. “While California puts the brakes on innovation and change with more bureaucracy and more regulation, Arizona is paving the way for new technology and new businesses.”

Uber pulled its 16 self-driving vehicles off the streets of San Francisco Wednesday after California’s Department of Motor Vehicles revoked their registrations last week. The pilot program, which is now coming here, lasted only a week.

Hard vibrations tend to make tech a little glitchey. Good luck with that.

AZ has some of the best roads I have ever driven on. Far better than CA.

Just as I fly on computer driven airlines where the pilot is essentially doing nothing the whole flight.

I can say that these may actually be an improvement over some of the retirees that I encountered there.

Nothing against retirees - I am one! But a machine that can follow a few basic driving rules and techniques would blow a bunch of the ones I saw completely out of the water. I mean basic stuff, like stopping at a red light, or NOT stopping at a green, or not driving for miles with the car centered over the line, doing 5-10 under the speed limit.
