The fact is he could have been a very well paid corporate attorney making mega bucks but chose public service instead. An honorable choice.

6. The thing is that Republican belittling

of "public service" works on two levels.

One, it appeals to those who believe the American gospel of money, i.e., that those who have money deserve it because they are smarter and better. For those who believe the American gospel, "public service" is for those who can't hack it in the real, profit-making economy. It is a place for weaklings to run and hide. Thus mocking public service elevates further the titans of profit.

Second, it appeals to those who have been led to believe that only crooks go into public service, i.e., "public service" is a scam by which you go work for the government in order to get rich yourself, a la Duke Cunningham and Tom DeLay.

So yes, it kills us, but as progressives we have not figured out an effective way to fight back against these effective memes yet.
