A Call For The Economic Boycott Of North CarolinaRev. Dr. William J. Barber II
Huffington Post
If such a blatant abuse of power goes unchallenged by people of good will, these legislators will do more than wipe away the rights of millions of North Carolinians; they will spread the virus of injustice throughout the body politic of the entire nation. Their actions will signal to other would-be tyrants that they can get away with non-democratic power grabs with impunity. The results could set civil, social, and economic rights back more than 50 years.
In light of all the wrongs perpetrated by a radically regressive legislature that violate our Constitution, our civil rights commitments and our moral values, we as the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP will meet and complete a formal proposal endorsed by the state executive committee to put before the national board that asks approval of and calls for an economic boycott of the state.

(989 posts)incoming Democratic Governor, Roy Cooper. I was shocked and angry when it all started.
Then, I found out that it is a time-honored tradition in North Carolina to try to hobble the opposition party.
In 1972, 1984 and 1988 the DEMOCRATS did virtually the same thing to incoming Republican Governors.
I am a Democratic Precinct Chair in NC and I have great respect for Dr. Barber and have stood with him on Moral Mondays over the past several years. However, a boycott on North Carolina will only hurt it's citizens---not the people in the legislature. They didn't care that we lost jobs and basketball because of the HB2 law.
Asheville and other Western NC counties only have one industry--tourism. If we lose that then you have the poorest counties (which are always forgotten by Raleigh) with higher unemployment. We just had over 50,000 acres burn in the wild fires and a boycott will put another nail in the coffin.
The State Board of Education decided to sue about one of the new laws and today the court put a hold on the law. Roy Cooper is a fine attorney and he will hack away at the laws.
The only thing that will really fix NC is to vote the rats out of office.

I am a resident of NC. I decided none of our vacation dollars would be spent in NC until HB 2 was repealed (and we usually
rent a house at the beach at least once a year--and sometimes more.) I've told both rental agencies in the town where we prefer
to go (Emerald Isle) and I'm determined to keep that promise.
Good for Rev. Dr. Barber. He is an incredible man and devoted to the cause of equal rights for everyone.
