(135 posts)Medicaid in the United States is a social health care program for families and individuals with limited resources. The Health Insurance Association of America describes Medicaid as a "government insurance program for persons of all ages whose income and resources are insufficient to pay for health care".[1]

(135 posts)Me: Medicaid is essentially free health care for the needy.
You: That would be Medicare.

(135 posts)For real, I think we can agree free healthcare (Medicaid) for all would be a better plan than whatever the republicans are going to stick us with.

(115,681 posts)to travel to see a provider after a 4 month wait, that is also a problem. Health care should not be available as only a "safety net". Prevention is good, early diagnosis and treatment is good. Waiting until you need to be hospitalized is not good. "Just go to to the ER" and make them eat the cost as well as tie up resources is not a good solution either.
Many providers don't take it because it pays so little.

(2,787 posts)Most primary care doctors accept medcaid. Although it is true most specialist do not.Btw there is also quite a few specialist who don't take medicare either. If we had a had a medicaid for all system they would almost be forced to accept it,because fewer people would have private insurance plans and doctors need patients.

(108,996 posts)but I am close to a young woman on Medicaid and she only has to do some paperwork once a year.
She also has some excellent providers -- I helped her choose from the list.

(14,922 posts)that we will all have Medicare some day after we turn 65, or sooner if disabled, so expanding that so that we all have it now instead of later isn't so much of a stretch. For better or for worse, Medicaid is stigmatized as an "us vs. them" program in some circles and that may be problematic in terms of broad acceptance. FWIW, I am a strong advocate of single payer universal health care and of getting the private insurance companies out of the equation, regardless of what we end up calling it.
