I didn't until watching Rachel M's show tonight:
Some 300 U.S. Marines landed in Norway on Monday for a six-month deployment, the first time since World War Two that foreign troops have been allowed to be stationed there, in a deployment which has irked Norway's Arctic neighbor Russia.
Officials played down any link between the operation and NATO concerns over Russia, but the deployment coincides with the U.S. sending several thousand troops to Poland to beef up its Eastern European allies worried about Moscow's assertiveness.

(53,157 posts)It was going to happen regardless of Putin's current outrages. However, it appears that Obama sped up the timeline for the excercise so that the equipment got into the baltic states before he left office, understandably not trusting Trump to do it. Most of the tanks were desert camo. General Ray explained they did not have time to paint them green camo for the European continent.
Our NATO allies desperatly wanted this exercise so that we could train for any potential defense against a further Putin land grab. They know we need to be prepared for immediate action, so there is not a repeat of how it was when Putin rushed into Crimea so fast that we could do little more than watch.

(37,672 posts)Two Norwegians (I checked their ID's) posted that US troops have been around, most of the country's glad to see them, no worries, because we're NATO. It's all good.
They said they don't care what Russia thinks.

(93,581 posts)I'm truly sorry, but I concluded that during the BushCheney admin. As long as it's someone else's relative, and as long as there is such a low percentage of Americans serving, foreign excursions are just too easy to ignore -- especially by young people. My generation's outrage helped bring the Vietnam war to an end, because so many were dying and everyone was at risk from the draft. Well, nearly everyone -- must remember TANG.

Even with Poland, invasion of Norway is deemed an acceptable loss to NATO, preventing a regional war.
This is the same as Taiwan, where it is ill-advised to enter into a war to prevent China from seizing it.
The provoking of China is there to act as a diversion, while the challenge to the island might bring into question the legitimacy and power of the Chinese government--causing them to act out and start a bloody campaign to retake the island by force. Since all citizens of Taiwan are conscripted, it won't end well.
In Norway, he pretty much is doing a China, where Putin wants to secure the land near oil and shipping lanes.
