(42,641 posts)He's one of 2,000 GM factory workers losing their jobs on Friday, the same day that Trump will be sworn in as the 45th president.
Sheridan -- and thousands like him -- are desperately hoping Trump will save their jobs.
"Please help us in Lordstown," says Sheridan, a soft-spoken Midwesterner with three kids. "This is a great middle class job. You can't find one better around here."
So he voted based on Trump's simple slogans? The problem when low-information voters choose is that often their uninformed choices have real consequences.
And if the ACA is repealed, Sheridan's rough day wil get even worse.

Greed, automation and offshore outsourcing ain't going to be put back in their tubes. How long are these people going to continue to blame Democrats for the problems Capitalism (and the Republican business dicks that control it) caused?

(11,932 posts)For those of us that are in Michigan and the state of the Big 3 automakers is a daily news item, these layoffs are
somewhat routine. Plants are almost always dedicated to a specific car model and depending on consumer preferences can and will need to cut back on production based on sales.
In the case of Lordstown, the Cruze sales are down and the plant is going from 3 shifts to 2. This is most likely caused by the price of fuel and increased consumer demand for Crossovers, SUV, and Trucks. Those plants have been working a lot of OT the last several months.

(6,890 posts)With the coming revolution electric cars combined with automation, there simply won't be a need for many factory workers. Additionally those care aren't going to need the maintenance as their gasoline counter parts meaning service workers will also be affected.
