Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI've lost all hope. My country is not the country I thought it was.
When George W. Bush stole the election, I was full of white-hot rage that fueled me through his 8 years in office.
I was appalled at how Obama was treated for the past 8 years, but I thought it was just a vocal, but dying minority.
This new abomination, though. I go through life EVERY DAY running into Trumpers who think everything he's doing is just great.
No matter that he stole the election through Putin's help.
No matter that he's violating the Constitution right and left.
No matter that he's trashing our reputation all over the world.
No matter that he hates everyone but straight, white, Christian men. And is busy trashing everyone else's rights.
I'm just so disillusioned.
We can march and protest all we want, but nothing will change. He will just "fire" anyone who disagrees. And he'll get away with it.
Just like he's gotten away with not revealing his taxes, treating most citizens like scum, saying things that would disqualify anyone else.
No one that matters seems to care. He appears to be completely unstoppable.

(61,700 posts)Everything you say is true. We've discovered that half the country is meaner and stupider than we thought.
So, we have to resist and figure out a way to take back the country. To do that we have to stay strong. That means surrounding ourselves with as much strength and positivity as possible.
I wish you strength and peace.

(27,169 posts)Friday, when the "Muslim ban" was announced, I sent out an email to all my fellow faculty at the college where I'm a professor, outlining how it was going to directly affect one of my students (an Iraqi).
College professors, right? Those left-wingers who can always be depended upon to support humanitarian causes?
Ha!
I got blasted for sending out the email, saying "I don't want to be involved in politics" (read: I don't care about my students).
2 faculty, Veterans, replied that I had basically insulted them and their service in keeping this country safe.
So much for supposed "liberal academia."
My heart is just really broken right now. And I'm feeling very alone.
I don't know where you guys are, that you are getting all kinds of support. It just doesn't seem to exist where I am. I'm jealous, I admit.
Moving is out of the question for me. I'm tenure-track (after being an adjunct for a decade). I can't afford to give this job up.

(10,252 posts)The main reason IMHO that our country has gone astray is that far too many people have a broken moral compass, lost their sense of morality and ethics. We don't teach ethics in school any more. And people are so consumed with the pursuit of money, that for them, money is a higher value than the happiness of people. Money is nice, but it doesn't create lasting happiness.
EVery religion teaches the Golden Rule of "Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you." And you don't even have to b e religious to understand that practicing the Golden Rule is in everyone's self interest. So when you get selfish emails from your professor collegues, remind them about the Golden Rule.

(16,334 posts)seriously I know many of us feel the same way. It is heartbreaking. I waver between anger and frustration to just plain sadness and disbelief.
One moment of hope was at the women's march. While standing and waiting, I met so many people who are feeling the same way. I met people who have never been involved in anything before but felt they had to at this point. I met an older women who said "Y'all know I was doing this 45 years ago, too."
I don't know how you can find support in your area but I suspect there are more people feeling like you do who don't know how to deal with it or connect with others about it.
Send the emails. Speak your mind. Do what you feel is right.

(10,252 posts)Channel your emotions into action. Put on and pull up your hero britches. Nothing lasts forever. You may be depressed now, but look in your heart for the courage needed to fight this evil. Use your common sense to see the light that dispells the darkness and hopelessness and chaos that Trump spreads on whatever he touches. Don't panic, because panic implies paralysis. You will be far more effective if you calmly look evil in the face and say "Boo!" Stay calm and focused on getting progressives elected at all levels.
Get involved with a local Dem or Indivisible.org group in your area. We need everybody to stand up, to speak up, to be a fearless hero in the fight against greed, stupidity, and hatred. Everyone matters!

(6,551 posts)Trump is not unstoppable.
If his outrageous behavior continues, the pressure will build and build on the Repubs.
The key is to embarrass him, humiliate him, because he simply cannot take it.
He will continue to overreact and then will do something that even Repubs will oppose. Not publicly, but privately and pressure on Repubs will increase.
This is far, far from over.

(4,492 posts)For every vocal Trump supporter you encounter, choose to donate $5 (or what you can afford) to Planned Parenthood, ACLU, your state or local Democratic Party, etc.
Show up at your local party meetings, work with candidates running for local offices, or run for office yourself.

(28,271 posts)You'll kick your ass for the rest of your life if you don't. If you need some encouragement, pull up some footage of the French Resistance fighting the Nazis in the streets of Paris. That's where things are headed in the United States of America, right now.
