President Donald Trump said he will urge Senate Republicans to scrap filibuster rules, or take the so-called "nuclear option," if Democrats in the increasingly tense chamber use them to block his nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.
After Trump appointed Gorsuch, the 49-year-old conservative appeals judge, to the top U.S. court Tuesday night, Democrats signaled they could delay the nomination. If they filibuster, Republicans, who have 52 Senate seats, would need 60 votes to confirm him unless they cut that rule.
Trump told reporters Wednesday that he would encourage Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to take that route, which would require only a simple majority.

(531 posts)the concept of the constitution is lost on Trump.
I think we need to ring the ears off our congresspeople's telephones for the next two years and make them fear for their political lives. Protestors are just the great unwashed to Trump.

(531 posts)I went to a food bank the other night and it was pure insanity. The organizers were running around sweating bullets, they had to give out tickets for a 'lottery' after the people who'd gotten places in line got their food because there were so many people, so not everyone was going to get food. I had gotten there just in time to get one of the actual line numbers. A woman sat down next to me frantic because she'd never been there before & didn't know what to do & now was late & didn't get a number, she was assigned to be part of the lottery for leftover food, I asked her if she had kids, she said 'just one' so I handed her my number and walked out. The whole situation was so depressing...I know how to survive and have eaten my share of dumpster-dived food. I don't think people like this woman are going to come out for a national strike. But a percentage will. I am not saying it is a bad idea at all, I just think people are so desperate now they can't take anymore losses.

(19,636 posts)I know what you mean.
Unions,do have,strike funds though.
A week or two of all the major unions striking would bring Trump crashing to eatth.

(531 posts)I have never been in a union. That is good to know, can they possibly have enough funds to cover a nationwide strike? Trump will probably just demand everyone be fired. I know so many of my railroad worker cousins who are in unions voted for Trump. They do this kind of crap all the time. My brother is a republican and he is in a union but votes for republicans all the time (though he hated Trump).

(82,849 posts)Remember that Sen. McConnell said that President Obama didn't represent the true will of the American people because his party lost seats in the 2014 election, even though President Obama had won re-election with a majority vote in 2012. President Trump, by the same token (no pun intended), similarly does not represent the true will of the American people, because not only did he fail to win a majority of the popular vote in 2016, he didn't capture even a plurality of the vote, and his party was outpolled in the national popular vote. Therefore, the Senate is bound under the McConnell Rule to refuse even a committee hearing for Judge Gorsuch.
That's how things work now, isn't it? We can't go against the ironclad rules laid down by the Senate Majority Leader can we?

(10,274 posts)I say, if Senate Republicans are dumb enough now to cut their own throats 2 or 4 years from now by getting rid of the filibuster, then let's be smart enough to just let them do the bidding of the Madman. Yes, it will hurt between now and then, and yea, the Courts specifically and Justice as both a concept and a department will require a deep cleaning after but if we dig our feet into the real work that this Nation needs AND MEAN IT THIS TIME, we will still be better coming out the other side than when we started.
