by May Bulman
The core of Donald Trump supporters who have suffered most as a result of globalisation will be the first to suffer under the Trump administration, a Nobel Prize winning economist has said.
Joseph Stiglitz, an American economist and former vice president of the World Bank, who won a Nobel Memorial Prize in 2001, said the Presidents economic programme was likely to trigger a vicious cycle, in which those who have suffered most from globalisation over the past 25 years would be the first victims.
Speaking during an interview with Le Monde, Mr Stiglitz, who has previously denounced the excesses of globalisation and its contribution to the rise in inequality, said while Mr Trump's protectionist policies may save "a few hundred" American jobs, this would not compensate for those that will be lost.

The truly sad and stomach-turning thing is that those of US who didn't vote for that mentally disturbed fool will be suffering right along with them. I could care less if they suffer. I'm ONLY worrying about those of us who didn't vote for him but who will be suffering.

(19,569 posts)When he says he hopes the euro will fail, its because he hopes this will brings benefits for the US. Its really stupid. In reality, a stronger Europe is better for the world and America.
This is the problem with an ego-driven personality in a position of power, Trump is more concerned with how he looks than what benefits the US.

(6,418 posts)...if I recall correctly it is that need for others to lose that separates narcissists from malignant narcissists. The biggest issue with them is their they become very destructive (to themselves and others) when they get caught up in a narcissistic rage event, often willing to cut their nose off to spite their face.
Of all the personality disorders, malignant narcissists are the scariest of disorders because they tend to be generally intelligent and their need for adulation is insatiable. That combination often allows them to achieve power positions and they stop at nothing to fill their insatiable need.
Everyone is asking how long the republicans are going to take this chit. The battle I'm waiting for is Trump v. Bannon. It's a when, not if...because eventually Bannon won't be able to feed Trump's narcissistic needs and then, the malignant part takes over and Bannon becomes the enemy.
I'm not sure which of the two I'd bet on but it's going to be Thunderdome time - two men enter, one man leaves.

(31,261 posts)Technology has driven massive job loss, destruction of the middleclass, and income inequality. What should now be happening is leaders should start intellectual underpinnings of an economy that has a guaranteed minimum income at it's base, along with health, dental and vision care. Without the intellectual underpinning of what a new capitalism based economy should look like, deep recessions or depressions will just cause more economic grief and may be severe violence and killing.

Trump will hurt rural people badly, his behavior already threatens the markets they have for the few products they offer. America is fast headed toward becoming a nation of relatively well off coastal people and less well off interior people, technology is driving that transition since virtually all companies steeped in the "new" economy stay on the coasts, even when they expand from their home base.

(31,261 posts)Even if the Courts don't force him to abandon the ban, he will have to abandon it. Beside being a recruitment tool gift to terror groups, the ban is stripping the USA of Doctors, High Level engineer, Professors. In addition, the ban is causing our allies to start the nascent planning of how to live without the USA. The short and intermediate term economic damage from the ban will be measurable, but the long term damage is likely to be devastating and set the USA back permanently.

There is simply no place in this "new economy" for people in areas where schools place a greater emphasis on football and cheerleaders than they do on well-rounded/STEM educations.

Another thing is that Democrats have to understand that they can't win elections with just the northeast and the west coast. You have to have at least few states from fly over country to put you over the top. The last election should be a big wake up call in that regard.

All those former steel workers will realize they've been lied to, and are STILL un/under employed with no hope for their future.

(31,261 posts)Fifties or older and don't have a job should accept any job they can get, if they don't have high market, specialized skills. Most Trump supporters in old steel and coal towns don't have specialized skills, those people have no chance, if their industries do come back, they will be automated 10/1 machine/human and will employ only highly skilled workers for the few human jobs.

(45,806 posts)I think they believe him because they are desperate and so much want what he said to be true. I honestly feel very bad for them. I can't come up with anything that would help them either. I suspect they've been caught in that change period where the job market changes dramatically and fast, similar to the birth of the era of the car v/s horse & buggy. Suddenly there was no need for blacksmiths, wagon makers, etc. This time was the birth of the computer, the internet, and the robot.
