Trump clearly stated he was getting rid of Obamacare. They also don't really understand the goals/agenda of the GOP, which is his party. It was pretty clearly stated. I think they were hearing only what they wanted to hear and discarding the rest... Also, there seems to be real embarrassment over his Tweets. I guess they thought it was all for show before and didn't fully understand the guy is a true thin-skinned narcissist, and they can't change. And, obviously, many bought into "crooked Hillary" and didn't actually do even the tiniest bit of research.

They are perfectly willing to throw away their rights, their kid's futures, their environment, the Constitution, etc so long as they can see their enemies crushed before they get thrown into a living hell.
Their enemies are liberals and elitists - anyone they think looks down on them for being a bit slow to accept diversity or that they would rather avoid anything that isn't like them or the way things have always been done around them.
They live in a small world, and they want to stay in that small world where the only access to anything outside is via the TV, the Radio, or a Computer - all of which they can turn off or change the channel on whenever they feel threatened or criticized. They violently resent anyone that reminds them of the real world outside their preferred existence. So who cares if they're going to pay significantly more for food and comfort, lose their health care, or whatever jobs are left to them. They're going to Heaven if something bad happens, anyway.
But with Trump, Bannon, Pence, and Corporate ownership, they'll be able to see those Liberals, the scary immigrants and minorities, and the educated Elites get theirs for being so uppity and Ungodly first!

My husband is a psychiatrist/psychoanalyst who has been in practice for 40 some years. Over those years, he's
treated a number of people whose issues/problems are quite similar. Letting go of parents who use financial
means to control their kids is not an easy thing to do.

So, your young friend is not alone. If she can find the time it could be very helpful for her to find a therapist who can
help her now--rather than waiting 10 or 15 years for the emotional wounds to fester--to deal with having such a$$hole

They are conditioned to accept all right wing propaganda.

Honestly they are mostly just plain old Republicans. There may be a few rustbelt voters who were more independent types but they probably won't regret their vote until they see that coal is not coming back. Remember, Trump won with a minority and a lot of cheating.

We need to concentrate on getting our own to the polls and come up with strategies to work through voter restrictions, etc. For example, Pennsylvania has a Democratic governor and a Democratic SOS. Now is the time to push them to get rid of electronic voting machines or at least have a paper trail.

I might actually know more Republicans because my family is very pro-GOP but most of my friends are Democrats although I am sad to report that a number of my liberal friends sat out this election or voted Green because they hated Hillary Clinton because they felt she was too right-wing and in bed with Wall Street.

I am "lucky" in that I know both working-class and affluent Republicans so I see how they tend to think differently. The affluent Trump supporters I know were not in favor of him during the primary. They wanted a more traditional Republican but eventually they jumped on the Trump train during the general election primarily due to the tax issue it seems. The working-class Republicans I know liked Trump's immigration and trade stances a lot. Another factor I think is religion. The Catholics I know are split 50/50 Democrats and Republicans. All of the Protestants I know are Republicans. My Jewish friends are all very liberal, solid Democrats.
