It would be a giant shitshow that makes Iraq look tame in comparison, and would tie up the US military such that they can start moving against eastern Europe.

as to Iran, long term, short term, and that is what rump/bannon will be told to do.

We know Tillerson and Putey fuck murderous dictator and rump/bannon are in business together as to the oil in Russia, so what does Putin want in Iran?

We know that once the oil in Russia is out of the ground, processed by Exxon, they will want to sell it and for much more than it is going for now.

So, how do you jack up oil prices? You start a war that prevents the flow of oil out of the Middle East?

I think that is what we can look for but not now, too soon. What Putin wants is what we will do, that much you can be sure of.

Russia's economy is heavily based on its exports of oil and natural gas. It's a short-term solution to Russia's economic issues, and the blame can be laid at the feet of the US.

Putin has armed the Iranians well. And any attack on Iran by the US will be solo, even Israel won't risk their planes.

An attack on Iran will do a number of things:

1. Stray our relationship with allies in Europe and Asia even further. They may even condemn our actions.

2. Taking significant casualties will demoralize things here at home. And wouldn't be surprised the result was more useless military spending.

3. Cause a huge spike in the price of oil.

4. Get the Sunni and Shia to stop fighting each other and rededicate their energy back on the US.

Russia has already rejected putting Iran "on notice" by Trump.

If the US were to invade and occupy Iran, it must might have several problems for Russia:

Russia would lose a trading partner

Russia would have to be OK with American soldiers closer to their borders

Russia would have to be OK with Americans controlling a part of the Caspian Sea

A destabilized Iran would also bring Daesh closer to their borders

It would also send a message to future Crimea like places that if the going gets tough, then don't count on Russia

Don't get me wrong, I think Putin helped form the Trump administration, and Trump needs an external enemy, but now we might be reaching an impasse, sooner rather than later.

We could destroy it, yes. But occupy it?

Not, I think, without lots of help.

We were barely able to occupy Iraq. (And we all know how that turned out.)
