No, the Australian media is not applauding DT. They're reacting the same way we are.

The right-wing media who appear to applaud his bullying tactics are not representative of the reaction there.

But not since the rancorous days of Richard Nixon and Gough Whitlam has there been anything approaching this madness.

Everybody, Turnbull included, insists the alliance is rock solid and tickety-boo and they well may be correct. But after a long period of strong personal relations between leaders - Bush and Howard, Gillard and Obama and Turnbull and Obama - we have entered uncharted waters.

Former US Ambassador Kim Beazley once described Trump as a narcissistic buffoon and these traits appeared to come to the fore during that phone call, so dutifully leaked to the Washington Post. Trump did not treat Turnbull like the leader of a valued ally but more like a piece of s--t on his shoe.

Trump appears to have stamped his feet and screamed at the prospect of having to honour the deal Turnbull struck with Obama, a deal that jars with Trump's immigration ban and which, he later tweeted like the juvenile he is, was "dumb".

Adding insult to injury, the leak was swiftly reinforced by a hostile statement from the US president, in the form of his tweet that he's still considering the "dumb deal" with Australia on refugees.

Says Professor Curran: "I'm not sure the Trump administration gives a crap about the Australian alliance."

And this is the nub of it. An alliance, regardless of the formalities, is a dead letter unless it is infused with political will. Can Australia trust its great and powerful friend?

Or, as James Curran puts it: "If you have this sort of tension this early in the life of the administration over relatively small beer, what will happen in the event of a major crisis?"

Speaking from Singapore, former foreign minister Bob Carr said the furore around the phone call dispelled any notion that Australia should tighten ties with the Trump administration or had a special relationship with America.

Declaring Mr Trump's behaviour would lead to a wholesale reassessment of ties to Washington, Mr Carr said: "It forces us to drop romantic notions of the alliance and now be more realistic."

"It liberates leaders to say no to Washington if it seeks to recruit us for any reckless adventure," he said.

"America has taken a nationalist direction and won't be returning to global leadership as we've understood it."

SkyNews is reporting that Mr Turnbull “wasn’t just sitting there being berated by Donald Trump” but pushed back against the “yelling” tone of the US President.

SkyNews reporter Laura Jayes said senior Australian government sources (who were not present during the call but part of discussions after) described Mr Trump’s tone during a call as “yelling”, but said the view from Mr Turnbull was that the President was a “bully”.

“What I derived from that was Malcolm Turnbull used this phone call to push back,” Ms Jayes said.
“He wasn’t just sitting there being berated by Donald Trump, he talked about how important it was for (Trump) to honour the deal.”
