Betsy DeVos clears another hurdle in early morning Senate vote

Betsy DeVos clears another hurdle in early morning Senate vote

http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/03/politics/betsy-devos-clears-another-hurdle-in-early-morning-senate-vote/index.html

(CNN)The Senate voted early Friday to advance President Donald Trump's education secretary nominee Betsy DeVos to a final confirmation vote, which is expected Monday.

The vote was 52 to 48 along party lines.

Senators convened at the unusual, early hour -- 6:30 a.m. ET -- because of Democratic stalling tactics that reflect their unhappiness with Trump's cabinet picks and the overall confirmation process.

Despite losing support from Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, she is expected to be confirmed Monday with the help of Vice President Mike Pence, who will be in the chamber to break an expected 50-50 tie.

2. So Senators Collins and Murkowski made a lot of noise but in the end, stood behind their guys.

52-48 means those two voted with their male colleagues against public education.

It's all kabuki theater with those two.

Edited to add: And now we know why Toomey hasn't been picking up his phone and ignoring calls from his constitutents.

Pennsylvanians...this is what you voted for.

10. If there's ONE aspect we can take to the bank, it's Republicans always fall in line.

Despite their 'newsworthy' deflection and sound and fury they spew before the cameras to give the impression that they're not the Borg, they will always, always fall in line behind their Dear Leader--whoever it is. Yes. Even the dipshit Putin-puppet. Even when it harms the country and weakens rights for the very constituents who vote for these knuckledraggers.

I voted for McGinty.

The thing with Toomey is that he's a former state legislator who had a reputation as a center-right pol. In Pennsylvania, 80% of residents never leave the state and often die near where they were born. People remember, too, which, in Toomey's case helps him. It was the same with Gerlach (PA-6) and it's the same with Dent, their is a base well-spring of support from their state legislature days. That is, many people base their votes on how these guys were as state legislators rather than how they are now. It will be the same with Bob Casey in 2018.
