"Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) sent a letter to Democratic National Committee (DNC) members on Friday, urging them to back Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) in the DNC chair race.
Lewis touted Ellison as a powerful organizer with a deep background in protecting civil rights and the best candidate for the job of rebuilding a fractured Democratic Party.
Keith's long history as an organizer who can energize the grassroots makes him the best choice to lead our party during this critical time, Lewis said in a statement.
He knows that sometimes you have to have good trouble. You have to get in the way and raise your voice. But protest must be channeled into electoral and legislative success, he continued. Keiths record standing with the grassroots means he is a trusted partner to harness this protest energy into rebuilding Democratic Party.
Ellison was the first candidate to jump into the DNC race and earned early support from top party leaders, including Senate Democratic leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) and top labor unions like the AFL-CIO."

(7,888 posts)John Lewis is a remarkable man. He has bourne the blows and served US for so many decades. Keith Ellison is the best choice, imo.

(8,201 posts)I was already on board for Ellison, but this just cements it. I hope it helps bridge the divide between people who supported Hillary and people who supported Bernie.

Let me guess that some of those same people won't do that now, and let me also observe that those who prefer someone else for DNC chair will NOT slur John Lewis
It is a strange thing, but being part of the Democratic Party we realize that Democrats do not always agree with each other on things, but when the stakes count, we end up sticking together, especially during elections, because we realize there is a difference between republicans and Democrats, and elections have consequences
I too am fine with John Lewis making his own decisions and have no problem with him doing so. Although we have a different candidate, I respect him and honor his lifetime of working for my rights.

(92,187 posts)have always been part of the Democratic party, and are in fact a healthy part of it, but we work within the process, and if it doesn't always go our way, we don't take our marbles and go home.
