I'm cynical. I wish it would hit him hard but it might just get buried in the barrage of manufactured crisises and inflammatory tweets.

1. It seems to be a blanket statement.

Not onlu do we employ our own bad guys, but we use them the same way Russia uses theirs, with no consideration of right or wrong. That's the message I got. It's consistent with his views on torture.

I am cynical too.

The reality is that the US doesn't have any special morality lacking in other countries, even Russia. We have done many bad things internationally and domestically. The idea of American exceptionalism clouds our vision and I think, prevents us from actually trying to do better in the world and internally.

The bad thing about the way Trump is using it is that he thinks that it is a game, that we should play dirty just to win. To win what? I ask. Trump has a pathological obsession with winning but no body wins when the world is in turmoil. Nobody wins a nuclear war. His stupid thinking is going to get a lot of people killed.

We should learn from our history, our mistakes, and accept that we have a lot more work to do if we are to claim American exceptionalism. We should not be doing what Trump is doing and using our history as an excuse to do more bad in the world.
