Any negative polls are fake news, just like the CNN, ABC, NBC polls in the election. Sorry, people want border security and extreme vetting.
This is not normal.
Edit to add:
I call my own shots, largely based on an accumulation of data, and everyone knows it. Some FAKE NEWS media, in order to marginalize, lies!

(14,564 posts)you are correct broadly, but people don't understand how deep of a hole are in now.
This country is broken roughly into 1/3s.
The third you are focused on - us. the people who deal in actual reality and have awareness of what is unfolding.
The third of republicans who are full in on whatever hateful shit that gets propagated.
The problem is the other "third" which are the people who are third party or don't engage in the political process.
While we are tuned in enough to know the bullshit, they are not. AND, they get sucked into either the "they are both the same" bullshit or the evil liberal boogyman bullshit.
All it takes is ONE hot button issue - spending, security, abortion, whatever, and people will go all in with the Rs or willingly go along for the ride over whatever stupid ass cliff they are taking us over.
And, particularly with Trump's frenetic style of non-stop stupid and hate, it muddles everything up.
SO - he blows things up with the muslim ban, and that is what everyone is screaming about while he undos envinromental, workers protections, financial protections, etc.
BUT, A MUSLIM MIGHT KILL ME! Sucks in 66% of the half wits in this country every time ...

(13,037 posts)from that perspective you're absolutely correct. Economics aside, many americans' beliefs on social issues re: abortion and other twisted notions that stem from deep-rooted cultural & religious beliefs also play a big factor. Sadly much of rural America is still mired in prejudice and narrowmindedness (due in great part to lack of higher education and/or social exposure). Question then is how do we combat that. We need to get more moderate or left-leaning voters (the 1/3 you're refering to who didn't bother to vote) to sign up & turn out, and that will take years to change at the grass roots level. Only 58% of US eligible voters turned out this past prez elections.
Cosmocat
(14,564 posts)Reagen was 100% cultural.
Bush I, they pulled the willie horton stuff, but that was mostly a holdover establishment election.
Bush II - the backlash from 8 years of Rs throwing a hissy fit over Clinton, when the country was doing well, they painted Gore as an "arrogant elitist" and as only we can do here in America, accentuated how much of an imbecile Bush II was with the "guy you would like to have a beer with."
Even to the extent that these assholes hold the mantle of "fiscally responsible" it has morphed more and more into a defacto "we do't want our tax payers dollars going to THEM."
So, all the true working class people who are rock solid GOPers will gladly buy into their blowing up their SS and Medicare, their Obamacare, because their greatest focus is on "THEM" getting their tax dollars ...
As you accurately note - the key is somehow getting the mushy middle to move away away from its tendency to buy into right wing bullshit.
The biggest thing really is that the Ds don't "stand" for things, and I mean that they don't have enough things that the party as a whole stands and FIGHTS for. While Rs are completely united on everything and screaming at the top of their lungs, elected Ds quiver in corner afraid of their shadows.
So, Rs frame both sides of the debate - how great they are and how horrible the evil liberals are. We can righteously point to how horrible they are, but we only have a handful of Ds who have two nuts - Bernie, Warren, Franken, that will stand up and tout what we STAND for.

(113,279 posts)Dark triad
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The dark triad is a subject in psychology that focuses on three personality traits: narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy.[1][2][3][4] Use of the term "dark" implies that people possessing these traits have malevolent qualities.[5][6][7][8]
Research on the dark triad is used in applied psychology, especially within the fields of law enforcement, clinical psychology and business management. People scoring high on these traits are more likely to commit crimes, cause social distress and create severe problems for an organization, especially if they are in leadership positions (for more information, see psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism in the workplace).
All three dark triad traits are conceptually distinct although empirical evidence shows them to be overlapping. They are associated with a callous-manipulative interpersonal style.[9]
Narcissism is characterized by grandiosity, pride, egotism, and a lack of empathy.[10]
Machiavellianism is characterized by manipulation and exploitation of others, a cynical disregard for morality, and a focus on self-interest and deception.[11]
Psychopathy is characterized by enduring antisocial behavior, impulsivity, selfishness, callousness, and remorselessness.[12]
A factor analysis carried out at the Glasgow Caledonian University found that among the big five personality traits, low agreeableness is the strongest correlate of the dark triad, while neuroticism and a lack of conscientiousness were associated with some of the dark triad members.[11]

(23,340 posts)If Trump has the Machiavellianism, he is really bad at it. I think he is actually too ADHD to think far enough in advance to have this quality. I don't see the full dark triad here.
Others around him, like Steve Bannon, have Machiavellianism in spades.

(60,010 posts)Most folks think "crazy" is the Joker, or the guys taking their clothes off and running around the yard or hearing voices and being all paranoid about spaceships and aliens
but the term mental illness has less of an image in people's minds.
So people ask "is he crazy?" meaning "does he fit the image of crazy that I have in mind?"
He is mentally ill.
He is " high functioning mentally ill," he can dress himself, in his own way, and act almost normal except when it comes to showing warm emotions and really caring ABOUT another person.
His mental illness used to be in the Mental Health handbook and then was moved out and now I don't know if it is back in.
But teh word narcissism is totally accurate and in his case, extremely severe.
Narcissism is listed in the Cluster B definitions of personality disorders, and there are some of them that are so overall pervasive that they cause serious problems for the person and those around him, such as Borderline Per. Disorder
( Think Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction, or Jessica Walter in Clint Eastwood's Play Misty for Me).
so, Trump is a severe example of how a personality disorder can be very damaging.
He really is not healthy at all, and needs to be removed, since there is no treatment and he is not capable of insight.

In a brief filed to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, nearly 100 companies including Facebook, Apple and Microsoft from the technology sector and other industries supported the lawsuit filed by Washington state and Minnesota.
The companies argue that Trump's order is "inflicting substantial harm on U.S. companies."

(5,810 posts)Because we were warned over and over (by people who know) that he apparently suffers from a very dangerous form of narcissism. The word Narcissist has been used casually for a long time to describe anyone who is self absorbed so the fact that it is a REAL psychiatric diagnosis has more or less been glossed over. People with knowledge and experience diagnosing people with this personality disorder repeatedly said that tRump shows more than enough of the symptoms and behaviors to conclude that Malignant Narcissistic Personality Disorder is an accurate diagnosis to explain his behavior for the majority of his life.
Now the question is what do we do about the fact that we have given the power of the Presidency to a person who is not capable of doing the job. The Congress has the authority to remove him from office and our constitution gives another remedy in the 25th amendment. Whether either method is utilized remains to be seen, but we THE PEOPLE need to stand up and be heard. Pressure on the Congress must continue and get louder and more forceful. They will respond to overwhelming protests and we don't need to let up for one second. Removal by whatever legal means available needs to commence immediately.
