Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, And 93 Others Just Filed a Major Lawsuit Against Trump

Joining the resistance against president Donald Trump’s unconstitutional Travel ban, America’s biggest tech firms —including (GOOGL, Tech30), Apple (AAPL, Tech30), Facebook (FB, Tech30), Google Intel (INTC, Tech30), Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) Twitter (TWTR, Tech30), Netflix (NFLX, Tech30) and 93 others— just filed a court motion Sunday night declaring that Trump’s executive order on immigration “violates the immigration laws and the Constitution.”

“The travel ban represents a sudden shift in the rules governing entry into the United States, and is inflicting substantial harm on U.S. companies,” says the court document, according to CNN.

The motion was filed with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which on Sunday morning denied the U.S. government’s emergency request to resume Trump’s travel ban. The appeals court has asked for both sides to file legal briefs before it makes a final decision.

The lawsuit was filed by the attorneys general of Washington state and Minnesota. It’s the latest move by the tech industry to oppose Trump’s controversial order, which has run into hurdles in the U.S. court system.

Tech companies have been at the vanguard of businesses opposing the ban. Their lawsuit emphasizes the important role of immigration in the U.S. economy.

“Immigrants make many of the Nation’s greatest discoveries, and create some of the country’s most innovative and iconic companies,” it says, CNN writes.

“At the same time, America has long recognized the importance of protecting ourselves against those who would do us harm,” it adds. “But it has done so while maintaining the fundamental commitment to welcoming immigrants —through increased background checks and other controls on people seeking to enter our country.”

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick on Thursday dropped out of Trump’s business advisory council, citing the ban.

“The executive order is hurting many people in communities all across America,” Kalanick wrote in a memo to employees. “Families are being separated, people are stranded overseas and there’s a growing fear the U.S. is no longer a place that welcomes immigrants.”

I'm not sure how the article construed this as them filing a massive lawsuit, but there is quite a difference between the two.

I'm really happy people are pushing back.

They are supporting the states of Washington and Minnesota in the 9th district.

You might want to replace your article with this one, which accurately describes it:

On Sunday night, technology giants Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Netflix, Twitter, Uber and many others filed a legal brief opposing the administration’s contentious entry ban. The move represents a rare coordinated action across a broad swath of the industry — about a hundred companies in total — and demonstrates the depth of animosity toward the Trump order.

The amicus brief was filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, which is expected to rule within a few days on an appeal by the administration after a federal judge in Seattle issued late Friday a temporary restraining order putting the entry ban on hold.
