But we're past sexism, right?
Coretta Scott King, the widow of Martin Luther King, Jr. and a Civil Rights activist herself, wrote the letter on March 19, 1986. It was an indictment of Sessions as he was up for an appointment to the U.S. District Court.
The letter was originally addressed to Sen. Strom Thurmond, then on the Senate Judiciary Committee, against Sessions' confirmation. He was not recommended to the Senate on a 10-8 vote.

What a childish dick.

(11,800 posts)No one should be surprised by that. Additionally, I think the Senate GOP realized that shutting down Warren caused more press on the issue than they wanted. You know, the Streisand effect. Block two senators from reading the letter and it's front page news. I think they'd rather be viewed as the misogynist pricks they are (doesn't matter to the base, they're the same) rather than add fuel to the fire by blocking two senators from speaking. I personally think that both of those things were in play. Add in Warren voting against Mrs. McConnell for her cabinet position and the picture becomes quite clear.
Although, I'm not sure if Merkley voted against her.... If he did, that throws a wrench into my theory.
