by Alex Reimer
In nearly every liberal corner of the country, the Patriots have been castigated for their ties to Donald Trump. Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft are all friends with the President, defending his character at every turn. But its also worth noting that several Patriots players are taking a stand against Trump, humiliating him in public fashion.
In the aftermath of New Englands historic comeback win over the Falcons in Super Bowl LI, five players have come out and said they wont be going to the White House this year for a presidential photo-op. Martellus Bennett first revealed his plans to snub Trump at Media Night, saying he doesnt support him. The tight end reiterated his feelings Sunday.
Devin McCourty, whos one of the Patriots team captains, took his protest one step further. In addition to announcing his intended absence, he says he doesnt feel welcome at the White House with Trump in office. LeGarrette Blount expressed similar sentiments Thursday, telling Rich Eisen he doesnt think hes welcome there, either.
Chris Long also wont be in attendance, and Donta Hightower plans to sit out the proceedings as well. (Hightower also didnt go in 2015 when Barack Obama was president.)
snip - more.
other good lines
"With Trump in office, a record-setting number of athletes are expected to forego the White House tradition. For a man whos obsessed with appearance and aesthetics, that would be an embarrassing blow."
"Every other person whos ever sat in the Oval Office probably didnt spend any time stewing over athletes who didnt want to come shake their hand during a ceremonial event. But Trump is different. This is a man who on the first full day of his presidency, sent out his press secretary to lie about his inauguration crowd size."
"Given his tweet calling millions of protesters anarchists and thugs, Trump doesnt appear to respect the right of free speech."
"Nearly 30 years ago, Graydon Carter, now the editor of Vanity Fair, called Trump in Spy Magazine a short-fingered vulgarian.

(3,194 posts)Are wives even allowed to attend the WH visit? I think her statement about not supporting him had more to do with minimizing the backlash that was developing towards them. I would be shocked if Brady didn't vote for trump, and based upon the way they act as a couple, I'd be surprised if there was any conflict as to who got their support last November.

(27,850 posts)She doesn't support Trump and she said Brady did not vote for him (I obviously have no way of verifying that). It's unclear whether her citizenship has gone through and whether she voted, last I heard.

(31,261 posts)Not a typical Trump loving model. I got the sense that Brady was liberal based upon some statements he made when Shrub was President. Theo Epstein is definitely liberal, Brady used to hang around Epstein when Epstein was still in Boston.

I think it's pretty obvious his focus is consitently elsewhere.

(3,040 posts)Trump. Without successful celebrities loving and adoring him, Trump will fade away like a ghost.

(3,194 posts)He doesn't exactly have the support of many celebrities to begin with. His ego is big enough that he isn't going to let a few absent football players bring him down. When the visit happens, it will be reported at the end of the sports segment on the local news, and maybe the media will report the reasons why several players boycotted.
Why should he care if he has superstars performing at his inauguration or players visiting the White House. He's getting his way on everything that matters, like all his appointments getting confirmed. And since he has the blind repub mice following him like a pied piper, that will continue for at least the next couple of years.
It's like the fact that many folks HATE Brady, but it certainly does not bother him any, his life is going swell, so why should he care?

(3,040 posts)has always thought he was one of the Hollywood celebrities. He has said so himself, and everytime a celebrity snubs him, it is a hit against his ego. And, anytime there is a sad Trump, I am a happy person.

(11,666 posts)He got in trouble at Oregon when he punched a Boise State player over some racial taunt. But it was the coach's (Chip Kelly) first game as head coach and he was like a deer in the headlights and suspended Blount.

(32,136 posts)There was no "racial taunt". Blount said before the game they "owed them (Boise State) an ass-whoopin'." After Oregon loss the game a Boise State player came up to him and said, "How's that for an ass-whoopin'". Blount slugged the player and was suspended for the rest of the season -- as should have been done. No, Kelly was not a deer in the headlights. He wasn't going to take shit from his players. Later after Blount apologized to the player and university he was reinstated.

(368 posts)Julian Edelman seems liberal to me as well. He follows Bernie on Twitter (and doesn't follow Trump). Him and Brady are close though so I wonder what birdies are chirping in his ear. He's one of the stars of the team so it'd really make a statement if he decided not to go. Same with Gronk but Gronk probably doesn't even know what state he lives in so I don't expect too much from him.
I'm glad to see Chris Long skipping it as it shows some unity across racial lines.
