(31,392 posts)2. In McDowell County, Poverty is a Death Sentence - Bernie Sanders
Published on May 5, 2016
When we talk about poverty, I think a lot of people say, "Well somebody is poor who maybe lives in inadequate housing and that's just too bad, or may not have a good automobile or may not even be able to go to college." All of that's true. But poverty, and the stress of poverty, is much, much more than that. In many ways in our country the stress of poverty is a death sentence.

(31,392 posts)3. Poverty in America - Bernie Sanders
Published on May 5, 2016
What is strange about what goes on in America is that we are the wealthiest country in the history of the world, Sanders told more than 250 people at the Five Loaves & Two Fishes Food Bank.
He pointed to mounting wealth and income inequality nationwide. In West Virginia, while the top 1 percent saw incomes rise more than 60 percent from 1979 to 2012, incomes for everyone else fell by 0.4 percent. He also said 22 percent of American children live in poverty, including about 100,000 in West Virginia.
What poverty is about is dealing with the stress of whether or not your family is going to make it every single week, Sanders said. When you dont have any money youre fighting for your survival every single day.

(155 posts)5. McDowell County. WV
I now live in WV, although I originally came from Brooklyn, NY. I just looked up some statistics. The current population of McDowell county is 19,835; per capita income $14, 813; median income $23, 607; income less than 15K 30%; the current unemployment rate 14.10%, in 1992 it reached over 21%.
If anyone remembers "The Rocket Boys", this is the area they came from. These are good people and sometimes I am offended at the attitudes of some of the people on DU towards my state and its people.

(31,261 posts)7. Democrats should be having town halls all over the country,
Especially those planning to run for President in 2020. President Obama was successful because he went into small towns early and often and talked to people.
