Designed, Engineered, and Assembled in the USA:
From Ohio to you, all Maytag full-size washers and dryers are designed, engineered and assembled in the U.S.A.
Our 23 year old Kenmore (built by whirlpool) got through 3 kids, a grand kid, and us with no major repair ever.
Maytag was bought by Whirlpool over 10 years ago. AFTER Maytag left the USA for Mexico. Whirlpool brought those jobs back to the USA: http://inthesetimes.com/article/1790/maytag_moves_to_mexico & http://aoafa.org/whirlpool-expands-in-ohio-and-brings-jobs-home/

We are buying the top rated (86 points) Maytag metallic slate MHW5500FC: https://www.maytag.com/-[MHW5500FW]-5722603/MHW5500FW/
Consumer reports has the top 86 rating on three Maytag models. A Samsung is next at 84, but almost twice the price of our model.

(38,958 posts)but the Unions are fighting back. Launching a petition drive to gather signatures to get the measure on the ballot in 2018, something the Legislature didn't want (can't have the people voting on such things). If the measure gets on the ballot it will at the worst delay the implementation until after the vote. If successful that should put an end to the nonsense, at least one hopes. It will be an uphill fight, but it ain't over yet.

I remembered reading about them sending jobs to china after they bought Frigidaire like this: Electrolux To Move Production To Thailand: http://investvine.com/electrolux-to-move-production-to-thailand/
GE selling it's appliance unto to Chinese company Haier last year is still to early to tell what is happening.

This is what I recently bought when my 15 year old Gibson went out.
It is a large capacity machine and is Union made in the USA.
I got this in Nov. and I am pleased with it as it has no computer panels on it and is very straight forward to operate.
It came with a 3-year warranty and they say it may last up to 25 years. I hope it does because I'll be dead and gone by that time!

(6,843 posts)Planned obsolescence. They are not like the old ones. If you want a machine made to last 25 years, you want a speed queen or meil.

(20,869 posts)It was not cheap but if I will not need to replace it for 25 years, it is worth every cent. I paid $800 for it and that included installation, hauling away the old one and actually returning to re-install it as it is larger as I mentioned in my prior post as the laundry room had to be rearranged which involved moving the washing machine that is still going strong (3/4 horsepower and also a heavy duty Gibson bought in 2001 and has never required a repair (keeping fingers crossed!)).
The old dryer was fixed one time.
The reason the new Maytags, etc. are crappy is because they have parts from all over the world in them and you need to buy a warranty because they come with 90-days nowadays. They may be "Union made" but the parts are not!
to a Speed Queen dryer without all of the computer crap on it (makes it a lot easier to repair should the need arise!) plus you get the 3-year warranty w/it which Sears sells for $2-$3 hundred extra bucks.
When all is said and done, you are way ahead buying the Speed Queen (price works out to be about the same as I figured it out before I bought it in November of last year).
Sad reality that comes with all appliances these days.
They are no longer built to last that is for sure!
If you have old appliances that still work, I would suggest keeping them as they may be a lot better than anything that you can buy new (Speed Queen included).

(99,624 posts)Speed Queen didn't make the recommended lists for High-efficiency top-loaders or Front-loaders.
Among top-loaders with an agitator, Speed Queen stands out as a reliable brand (but has only one recommend washer out of four categories).
These conclusions are based on our failure rate estimates for washing machines by the 5th year of ownership, gathered from 69,277 subscribers who purchased a new washer between 2008 and 2016. Our statistical model estimates failure rates for washers not covered by a service contract and accounts for the number of loads of laundry run through the machines per week. Differences of less than 5 points aren't meaningful. Models within a brand may vary, and changes in design or manufacturer may affect future reliability. Still, choosing a brand with a lower estimated failure rate can improve your odds of getting a dependable model.
Recommended Top-Load Agitator Washers
Great washing isn't a given, so check our wash performance scores, and be sure to note wash times. Theyre based on normal wash on heavy-soil setting. Wash times have gotten longer as federal standards require that all washers use less water and energy.
Recommended Top-Load Agitator Washers list only Maytag and Kenmore.
It seems the Speed Queen can be expected to last. But cleaning and efficiency are not a strong point. But they are made in the USA!
What's behind our washing machine Ratings?
Experts at our National Testing and Research Center tested 137 models in washing machines to see which ones perform best.
We look for:
Overall score
Washing performance
Energy efficiency
Water efficiency
Gentleness
Noise
Vibration
Claimed capacity
