http://occupydemocrats.com/2017/02/14/dan-rather-just-went-viral-summing-trumps-flynn-russia-scandal/>"In these heady moments, it can be extremely difficult to make left or right of this new information and look at it in big-picture perspective but thankfully, we have journalists like Dan Rather to help make sense of it all.
Rather took to his Facebook page today to pen one of his trademark essays about the Flynn resignation, blasting Congressional Republicans for refusing to hold Trump and his cronies accountable for their lies.
Watergate is the biggest political scandal of my lifetime, until maybe now. It was the closest we came to a debilitating Constitutional crisis, until maybe now. On a 10 scale of armageddon for our form of government, I would put Watergate at a 9. This Russia scandal is currently somewhere around a 5 or 6, in my opinion, but it is cascading in intensity seemingly by the hour. And we may look back and see, in the end, that it is at least as big as Watergate. It may become the measure by which all future scandals are judged. It has all the necessary ingredients, and that is chilling."
"The White House has no credibility on this issue. Their spigot of lies cant we finally all agree to call them lies long ago lost them any semblance of credibility. I would also extend that to the Republican Congress, who has excused away the Trump Administrations assertions for far too long."<

(26,044 posts)If the Republicans had had control of Congress during 1973-74, and could have thus blocked Senate and House inquiries with subpoena power, Watergate would have been a minor footnote to history, and Nixon would have finished out his second term.

(25,244 posts)the Repug Congress makes it bigger than Watergate because they will do everything in their power to obstruct. That obstruction makes it worse than Watergate.

(22,308 posts)Reagan illegally sold missiles to Iran and only had to give a non-apology to put it behind him.
Shrub altered intelligence to illegally invade Iraq and then committed an endless list of war crimes and is proud of his actions in office.
Watergate was a joke compared to what Republicans do now.

(5,801 posts)have been manipulating the electoral process through a variety of machinations, ranging from voter suppression to gerrymandering, for decades.
Watergate took place to gain political advantage. The 'pukes have done far worse since then, yet continue to skate. Let's not forget turd blossom's outing of Valerie Plame. The nation's outrage bar has been raised higher and higher with each unpunished 'puke crime.

(1,803 posts)Watergate was political and partisan in essence, but was an entirely domestic. The current crisis, (Russiagate?), in contrast, is partisan in that the Republican Party and its current standard-bearer, put political party before country. Trump and the Republicans jeopardized, or at least undermined, this country's sovereignty in order to secure and maintain control of the government. We are in the midst of a major Constitutional crisis.

(5,611 posts)in our country, General Flynn is under investigation by the military and FBI BEFORE any of this new crap even became public (getting payments from the Russian gov, White House allowing Flynn to have total access to our top top secret security info despite Flynn's issues with Russian contacts, etc), the unbelievable, possibly treasonous actions by the Trump officials and Trump himself -- again, a foreign gov undermining our election AND blackmailing and paying the people at the highest levels of this government.
Rather is living in the Baby Boomer fantasyland regarding Nixon and Watergate. Watergate is nothing close to this -- in fact, we have never had anything close to this happen in our history. Watergate was a kid's game compared to this!

(1,803 posts)In US history. I initially thought about Warren Harding. But that was just corruption. The only other thing I could think of is the succession of the Confederacy, as it too threatened the existence of the Union.

(2,142 posts)I'm a little confused by Rather saying this is only a 5 or 6 (for now) compared to Watergate (a 9). In my opinion, this far exceeds Watergate for all the reasons you mentioned and more.
The fact that people aren't running around with their hair on fire at this point is both frightening and maddening. How far the Republicans have sunk to so easily and willingly sell our country down the river - it's mind-numbing.

But he's easy for the RW media (FOX, Breit etc.) to discredit because of the credibility scandal the Bush administration set up for him.
