It is an insult to Norman Rockwell, Ms. Ruby Bridges, the National Endowment for the Arts (being compared to the KKK), and to African-Americans as a people!

This type of "political cartoon", however, does show the mentality in which we as a nation now have to endure; i.e. bigots as the victims. 42. When I was young and stupid...

I did not realize that I had an inherent advantage in society over a whole segment of other people. Now, I am a person of color and have received my fair share of discrimination so it isn't that. I am however, a man. There are things that I never ever have to consider. There are things that when women would complain, I would roll my eyes, "like it isn't a big deal". I reacted to changing roles thinking that "being a man" was under assault. I realize now that gender equality is not zero sum. I define what being a good man is, being a good husband, being a good father. I do not lose when women win.


In case everyone is wondering where I am going with this, here it is. White people do not lose when people of color have truly equal opportunity either. To many (probably no one here) people think that when the status quo, the built in privilege of being White and being wealthy, is criticized, that it is an assault on "the way things should be" but to many many people it isn't the way things should be.

DeVos is being criticized for her views and her actions, not the color of her skin and not even her bank account. She is being protested because she has made it her purpose to destroy a system of public education that has been built over decades, which should be strengthened, not made into a commodity. Yet we have a cartoonist comparing her experience to that or Ruby Bridges a little girl who just wanted to attend a school that wasn't falling down around her. A girl whose only "bad" act was being Black and wanting to go to school. These are people who think that discrimination is when you challenge their dominance in society. They are victims because other people are saying that everyone's life experiences should be considered and respected.

They are stuck in an adolescent mindset.
