The Alabamafication of America (Yeah, my home state)

The 2016 presidential election looked, more than anything else, like an Alabama election. Donald Trump’s relentless appeals to populist conservative ideas echo decades-long trends in the South. The current worries about Trump’s irresponsible governing style are similar to concerns Alabama commentators have been expressing about their often-demagogic leaders since before the 1940s. To understand the Trump administration, in which Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions will likely serve as attorney general, we should look to Alabama, and the reasons why the state government is teetering toward collapse.

Leaders in all three branches of Alabama’s government are either under investigation or have been recently removed from office. After using his position to obtain over $1.1 million in financial favors, Mike Hubbard, the former speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives, was convicted of 12 felony corruption charges in July 2016. He has been described by many as “the most powerful man in Alabama,” a state where the governor has relatively little authority and the legislature holds all the cards—a simple majority is all that is required to override most vetoes. The Hubbard trial was full of fireworks, including testimony from former Governor Bob Riley, but ended in a sentence of only four years in prison.

The drama of the Hubbard case stirred up another scandal which otherwise might have gone unnoticed. Governor Robert Bentley, a man who ran his 2010 campaign on family values, divorced his wife of 50 years after allegedly having an affair with his powerful chief advisor, Rebekah Caldwell Mason. Although neither admit to a “physical affair,” sexual voicemails the governor left for Mason say otherwise. Bentley could be prosecuted for abuse of power—as governor, he ordered a state law enforcement helicopter to retrieve his wallet, which he had left by accident at his ex-wife’s house in Tuscaloosa on his way to the beach.

...snip

Using conservative populism to disregard the law

Moore’s flagrant disregard for court rulings is not unique in Alabama. According to Richard Fording, professor of political science at the University of Alabama, “Moore follows a tradition of defiance” to federal authority that has thrived in Alabama since the Civil War, reaching a climax when Wallace barred the doors to the University of Alabama after the Brown v. Board of Education case. Alabamians elected Moore back into office even after he was removed from the bench for ethics violations because, as Fording told the HPR, “it is politically profitable to get kicked out of office in this state.”

Using campaign money..
The new Senator Strange was going to prosecute him, but he was appointed to Washington.. How convenient.

And to even imagine that Trump will (continue to) govern like this scares the bejesus out of me.

that corruption seems to be running rampant. I'd say that they should be ripe for a changing of the guard but the people voting (or CAN vote I should say) seem to revel in being a deep red state. They seem to like being perpetually poor while their rulers pocket bucketfuls of corporate money and live in luxury, they seem to like struggling to get health care...........I could go on but you get the point. Until people care a lot...........

One word alone makes many people in AL vote for Republicans. "Abortion" Republicans have managed to own this issue and there just can't be another point of view.

As far as religion goes, I think that a lot of people really believe that suffering is their lot in life and may even feel guilty if they're not suffering. Or they see suffering as something noble or will help them get into heaven. It's hard to imagine (though I believe it) that some people are so fixated on things like women's reproductive lives (strangers, people they don't know) or people's sexual orientations that they will vote for anybody who says that they will go against abortions and/or queer people even though it will still leave them broke and miserable at the end of the day.

They are voting against their own interests (and others as well), but think they are doing the "right thing" because they are voting against one issue. They don't seem to be able to see their way around that.

are coming to take away your guns. Even local elections feature radio ads from repukes saying they will protect their district from Obama taking away their rights or Hillary forcing their children to become homosexuals. They make it sound like they're going to personally stand at the county line with their M-16s and keep marauding liberal savages from Washington at bay.
