(7,142 posts)he had Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson on who is a straight shooting truth teller. Wilkerson vouched for Mattis and said that he would resign before he carried out an idiotic Trump order. Mattis is certainly saying something in opposition to Trump but it isn't the first time that Trump's people weren't on the same page.
I don't think Mattis can be bought, I think what you see is what you get with him, but I could be wrong.

(3,847 posts)I'm hoping Mad Dog Mattis stays with his oath to the Constitution and doesn't care if they fire him for speaking the truth.

I pity the poor folks in our military.
Bannon and Trump have an empire to build on their dead and broken bodies.

IMO that's a weak statement leaving lots of room for the psychopath to proceed forward with his murdering soulmate from Russia.

(15,805 posts)He sent Matiss out to freelance on his own and do whatever he thinks best. Trump doesn't have a clue about anything and he knows he's in way over his head so he's just winging it and delegating his presidential authority to whoever is in the room with him at the time.

(49,054 posts)He is 100% for NATO (to UK PM May on camera at press conference).
He wants to destroy NATO if Matiss can't shake them down for money.
He wants to tweak trade treaties.
He wants to rip up NAFTA.
Every major issue he has taken both sides and sometimes three sides.

The same is true with this news release from Mattis. Trumpy doesn't care what kind of policy is pushed by Mattis. He probably doesn't get it that Mattis is contradicting him! And worse yet, he doesn't care, as long as Trumpy doesn't take a PR hit.

(8,361 posts)BRUSSELS Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Thursday that Russia will need to prove itself first before the United States and other members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are willing to let their armed forces collaborate a complicating factor in cooperation that President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have discussed adopting against the Islamic State in Syria.
Mattis, speaking at NATOs headquarters in Brussels, told reporters that U.S. and Russian leaders will engage politically, but said the conditions are not right presently for their forces to collaborate. The Pentagon and the Kremlin all but broke contact entirely in 2014, after Russias annexation of Ukraines Crimean Peninsula prompted international outcry.

(7,437 posts)Trumpy and Putin have been co-operating (on the US election and afterward) for months! What's the deal, Mad Dog? Don't you like that kind of co-operating? Trumpy wants to invite Putin to his Florida mansion for a card party, and you want proof of Russian co-operation?
I guess that Mattis can assist with Putin's invasion of the Baltics, since Putin is so chummy with the Trumpy White House.
Mattis either has to tell Trumpy and Bannon to STFU or he'll resign. This won't go well for the Mad Dog. He's up against a cabal of race war fanatics and fascists who want WAR with people of color and people of Islam, and who believe that Putin is of like mind.

(8,361 posts)direction Trump wants to go with policy. I also see Mad Dogs statements as a buffer/buying time against what Trump may want to jump into with Putin in Syria.
Ilsa
(61,709 posts)understands more about how the russian military achieves its objectives. Mattis doesn't want the US charged with their war crimes, or US soldiers treated as collateral damage.
Maybe it's good thing that Mattis is not so far removed from his loyalty to the military.

(10,279 posts)CNN and other news services have fired General Mattis because of a loss of confidence. That was totally unnecessary, but fake news and you the public have made it impossible for him to continue. All I can say is: don't watch CNN and other fakers.

(1,685 posts)If Matiss won't work with Russia to crush ISIS, that ruins the reason for why Trump is kissing so much Putin butthole.
Or maybe it is that Putin has something on Trump...
