The Human Be-In rally that touched off the Summer of Love in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on 14 January 1967 may have been a psychedelic, hippy-dippy, drug-addled, free-love, damn-the-man love-fest, but it did have one thing going for it: a permit.

Fifty years later, San Franciscans can order delivery of a joint with an app and marry a same-sex partner at city hall, but bureaucratic approval for a concert celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love is out of reach.

On 7 February, the San Francisco recreation and parks department denied a permit to the anniversary concert in a harsh letter to concert organizer Boots Hughston, citing his “numerous ‘misrepresentations of material fact’” in his dealings with the department.

“The Summer of Love was an incredible moment in our city’s history and its message of peace and love is more important than ever,” the department wrote, citing concerns over safety before adding: “We cannot put the public at risk and grant a permit for your proposed event.”

1. I am a SF native and resident and this has not been mentioned in our local news or mewspapers

Until I get a second source I will be suspect of this story. Usually SF loves these kind of things. I think the promoter was not taken seriously by the Park and Rec department. We have outside lands concert and the strictly bluegrass festival which have huge crowds.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A war of words has erupted over a concert planned to mark the Summer of Love in San Francisco.

The city at the center of the counterculture movement in the 1960s is gearing up for celebrations that included a "Summer of Love 50th Anniversary" concert that was to be a focal point of citywide cultural events. The June 4 concert in Golden Gate Park was expected to draw tens of thousands of people.

But city officials informed event promoter Boots Hughston this week his request for a permit was being denied. In a sharply worded, 3-page letter, the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department said that Hughston had made "numerous misrepresentations of material fact" that left them with deep concerns about safety and security measures for the concert.

The letter said Hughston had made conflicting statements about the expected crowd size and security preparations, on-site medical facilities and other matters.

"Given the ongoing uncertainty about basic safety elements of your plan and your unfortunate pattern of deception and misrepresentation about your planning efforts, we cannot put the public at risk and grant a permit for your proposed event," said the letter dated Tuesday and signed by Diane Rea, the department's manager of permits and reservations. The San Francisco Chronicle first reported the permit denial.
