...and I have to say... he is just the male, gay, Ann Coulter, right? I get the EXACT same vibe... this general sense of the fact that they don't REALLY believe what they're saying to be true, but just THRIVE off of the attention that the expression gives them? The jeering from the crowd, the negativity from the other guests... they appear to FEED off of it like mother's milk. Or am I crazy?

(111,419 posts)and he's slick as snot on a doorknob and ten times as nasty.
He's the type of self loathing gay man that extremist conservatism thrives on, he'll be a fully formed Roy Cohn some day, if we let him live and unless instead of conversion "therapy," he lucks into a head shrinker who will help him accept his gayness instead of being disgusted by it.
He's not nearly as glib as Coulter is, so he'll have a harder time being the darling of the far right, but he's at least as hateful, taking delight in making other people feel as uncomfortable as he does with himself.

Totally not impressed. And totally not worth all the hoopla.
Maher can be a dick. But he may have been right in this instance.

(2,013 posts)bloviating, piece of shit MONSTER spouting vitriol, unabashed... and it was just a little boy, acting up to get attention.
Larry Wilmore gave him the spanking he so desperately sought. But seriously, Wilmore... one of the HIGHLIGHTS of my NIGHT.

(3,077 posts)He is a weak little man boy emanating insecurity and self-loathing. Not impressed. I don't see the big deal. Major overreaction. He got schooled, now he can take his ball and go home.

(5,914 posts)It's either poorly conceived performance art, or he's just another desperate attention whore out for YouTube clicks and reality TV stardom. My money's on the latter.

(20,998 posts)...more of an Ann Coulter wannabe...but yes, the same vibe: attention whore with no reservations about employing hateful, bigoted rhetoric to entertain his fans and bolster his ego.
Milo's claim to infamy is that he's a gay man spouting this crap... which I am sorry to say. He should know better. He's had his 15. Time to move on.

(55,894 posts)I compare him to the Westboro Baptist Church because his grifting method is closer to theirs.
If he's going to show up somewheres to speak, don't get angry. Just stick a donation booth outside the venue for the ACLU.

(42,862 posts)Milo's being on Real Time is quite the "feather-in-his-cap" that can really HELP his career of spewing hate and intolerance and bigotry and ENCOURAGING and MOTIVATING others to do the same.
Thanks a fucking lot Bill Maher! You've just RAISED his stature! You've LEGITIMIZED him!
We'll only see more of that little SHIT now that you've helped him by giving him a NATIONAL PLATFORM!
I knew this would happen. Milo now has yet another line-item to add to his CV and his IMDB page thanks to Bill Maher.
And did I hear Bill correctly? Did he say that it "sounds reasonable" that transgendered women shouldn't be permitted to use the ladies' room because they're "confused" or that they put other women and girls at risk? (I'll have to see if I can find the transcript, I'm not inclined to go searching the entire youtube video to double check and get an exact quote.)
Maher is as obsolete as Ed Schultz and Cenk Uygur ... time to put him out to pasture.

(2,013 posts)in a weird way because I wanted to see what this monster was all about.
But after finally seeing him, I walked away thinking, "Oh, really? THIS is what everyone's on about? He's a pathetic little brat and now I can dismiss him outright." So it kind of had the opposite effect on me, to be honest. It de-fanged him. I don't even think he came out looking like a star for the Alt-Right; he wasn't vitriolic enough for them (or even clever enough for anyone else). I could be wrong...

(5,272 posts)It hardly legitimized him. The one thing that gave him street cred was that he was barred from speaking, which is why we should be careful about when we exercise that approach over just making the person look lightweight and silly, even though I understand the inclination. We after all, have the better ideas. We don't need to be afraid of that discussion.
As to Maher and Uygur, I appreciate both of them, and they generate important conversations you can't hear in most of media. I take their good and disagree with them on the bad. Maher is totally stupid when it comes to the issue of Islam, but the reaction should be to take his ideas down, because they are that thin and frankly inconsistent with himself...not shut him out of venues and make it seem like on this issue he's struck some sort of pay-dirt close to the mark that is freaking people out.
As to the bathroom comment, I see what Maher was responding to(a sense of safety for women who may have all kinds of real world concerns and triggers over male apparent presences where they should feel safe) but it was in-artful and accepting this kid's narrative of the facts versus what the realities of these laws are, and of how people would predominantly exercise their rights as human beings in those contexts. I certainly don't give him a full pass on this, and thankfully Larry Wilmore chimed in to challenge that pat acceptance.
But yes, as much as I agree with both Maher and Uygur on a whole swath of issues, there are those on which they are regressive--frankly still un-evolved on-- and should be called out on those, but I'll take them, and Randi Rhodes, and Amy Goodman, over most of the pool.

(3,208 posts)He sure is full of self hate and right wing talking points. Not a good combo!
I was glad Bill had him on. I don't like living in a vacuum. Sometimes you have to smell the shit in order to know what to clean it with.
I guess some people feed off of making others groan. I reacted the same as the audience. Not because it was a "trigger" (and that whole concept is odd to me, like saying people can't react?) and what else would I do? The man was on my TV. I could not say anything directly.
I think the other guests (esp. Larry!) did very well to show how they were intelligent and how stupid and pointless he looked compared to them.
I guess he thinks the money is good, but someday I think all of that hate is going to eat him alive.
