Many are curious what this press conference will entail. Has evidence been uncovered of life beyond our planet?
Participants of the briefing include Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters, Michael Gillon, astronomer at the University of Liege in Belgium, Sean Carey, manager of NASAs Spitzer Science Center at Caltech/IPAC, Nikole Lewis, astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute, and Sara Seager, professor of planetary science and physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
During the conference, NASA will be taking questions from the public and the media on twitter through the hashtag #askNASA. At 3 p.m. EST, following the briefing, NASA will host a Reddit AMA(Ask Me Anything) session with the scientists available to answer questions in English and Spanish.
The event can be streamed live on NASA TV at the time of the conference.

Maybe they will announce evidence that there is confirmation of life on one or more exoplanets?

(498 posts)I don't remember the last time Nasa had a big press conference where it announced anything that wasn't merely "oh.. interesting."
Life on another planet? Come on guys... they probably found the shimmering of possible ice on a planet several light years away and isn't that cool? Frozen water! and 5 years later they'll say oops we thought is was frozen water but it turned out to be a cloud.
Meh.

csziggy
(34,139 posts)They may have found planets with an Earth-like atmosphere.
Because our current atmosphere is a result of life, a planet with a similar atmosphere would be definition have life on it.

(12,047 posts)NASA said Monday it will soon announce a major discovery regarding planets that orbit other stars.
The agency will make the out-of-this-world announcement about a discovery beyond our solar system at a press conference at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
The space agency will present new findings on planets that orbit stars other than our sun, known as exoplanets, NASA said.
The announcement has the astronomy community abuzz that NASA is set to announce its best finding thus far that a planet outside our solar system could potentially support life.

"Potentially support life"
As YOU know it? How earthnocentric. They must mean water, because we are a water world.

(22,308 posts)Water on exoplanets is old news. The truth is, water is common no matter what sci-fi stories say.
I am liking csziggy's hypothesis in post #39. This would go beyond just finding water.
Signs of Water Found on 5 Alien Planets by Hubble Telescope
By Mike Wall, Senior Writer | December 3, 2013
^snip^
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has detected water in the atmospheres of five planets beyond our solar system, two recent studies reveal.
The five exoplanets with hints of water are all scorching-hot, Jupiter-size worlds that are unlikely to host life as we know it. But finding water in their atmospheres still marks a step forward in the search for distant planets that may be capable of supporting alien life, researchers said.
"We're very confident that we see a water signature for multiple planets," Avi Mandell, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., lead author of one of the studies, said in a statement. "This work really opens the door for comparing how much water is present in atmospheres on different kinds of exoplanets for example, hotter versus cooler ones."
