(101,316 posts)There is something specific at the end of the "butler" thread that is important.

(101,316 posts)As you've pointed out, he started several threads. Not that the OP explicitly says it was a thread he started that we should look at. It could be one someone else started, say, from Butler County.
Even more useful would be if you tell us which thread he's talking about. There are several in his profile; are you saying we must read them all to find out what's going on?

(19,564 posts)The proof of the fraud has been posted in each one. The problem is it's toward the bottom of the threads and some people are still donating before they see it.

(63,912 posts)A good DUer sent me a pm alerting me to the scam and I had to go through a process online at gofundme.com to rescind my donation. I also talked to my credit card company. What a pain in the ass all of that was, esp. since I am not well today.
Can't the admins rescind his account?

I feel awful about this. I only donated $20 but am concerned about my cc info now. And I hate that people scam like this.
Just received this from GoFundMe:
This is David from GoFundMe's Trust and Safety Team and I'm here to help.
Rest assured that we are investigating this campaign. If you have any further information to add to your report, please simply reply to this email.
Additionally, we have refunded your donation. The funds will be credited back to your account in 3-7 business days. If someone else made the donation without your permission, then please let us know that.
In addition to the report you have submitted to us, we encourage you to contact law enforcement officials in your area if you believe this user is committing fraud or breaking the law in any way.
We will follow up with you only if we have any further questions.

Please include the fact that the campaign is "intentionally deceptive" in your report as that is part of their language on the site when dealing with fraudulent campaigns, and may help DU'ers get their money back. Many kind people who did not have the money gave because of the emotional, manipulative nature of the request. Whether you gave or not, you were solicited. Please file a report on behalf of the kind people who were deceived.
If you like you can borrow from the language below, as it has been verified by myself and others through phone calls to the hospital and area agencies.
ALSO: If you have contributed to this campaign using a bank or credit card, call the number on the back of your card and request the funds be returned to you, as the basis of your payment was fraudulent. Many times your card servicing will be able to return your funds immediately.

(15,317 posts)I wondered about that. I have given to several GFMs in the past. I wondered what would happen in cases like this. It's good to know they will give refunds. I hate they did this. I could have easily given to this one as well. I read the thread when it was first posted and didn't think anything looked off about it at the time, and felt horrible for him and his family before it was revealed it was a scam.
