The Travel Press is Reporting the 'Trump Slump,' a Devastating Drop in Tourism to the United States

The Travel Press is Reporting the 'Trump Slump,' a Devastating Drop in Tourism to the United States
Experts across the travel industry are warning that masses of tourists are being scared away from visiting the United States, and the loss of tourism jobs could be devastating.
By Arthur Frommer

Though they may differ as to the wisdom of the move, the travel press and most travel experts are of one mind: They are currently drawing attention to an unintended consequence of the Trump-led efforts to stop many Muslims from coming to the U.S., pointing to a sharp drop in foreign tourism to our nation that imperils jobs and touristic income.

It’s known as the “Trump Slump.” And I know of no reputable travel publication to deny it.

Thus, the prestigious Travel Weekly magazine (as close to an “official” travel publication as they come) has set the decline in foreign tourism at 6.8%. And the fall-off is not limited to Muslim travelers, but also extends to all incoming foreign tourists. Apparently, an attack on one group of tourists is regarded as an assault on all.

On the web, flight searches for trips heading to the U.S. out of all international locations was recently down by 17%.

A drop of that magnitude, if continued, would reduce the value of foreign travel within the U.S. by billions of dollars. And the number of jobs supported by foreign tourists and their expenditures in the United States—and thus lost—would easily exceed hundreds of thousands of workers in hotels, restaurants, transportation, stores, tour operations, travel agencies, and the like.

taking my niece to all sorts of touristy places. It was a true melting pot with people from all over the world and so glorious to experience (especially when my niece lives in a not so diverse area in Georgia). I am sure trump has turned off a LOT of people from feeling comfortable here now.

The Bloomberg administration spent millions to market NYC, and when Barack Obama was elected, the floodgates opened. His ascendancy to the presidency reinforced America's image as a beacon of hope and a bucket-list destination. Those years were good for business and, more importantly, were a favorable time for tourists and students from all over the world to learn our history and culture, and to form friendships with Americans.

The tourism business breathed new life into the city's economy. Its benefits were shared by all, as the summer arts and recreation programs prospered.

I predict that 45's deep unpopularity, his disturbing ideas and and the chilling visa regulations will wipe out many tourism-related businesses that depend on international traffic. His destructive role will be in sharp contrast to the previous administration. As a marketer I came to have enormous respect for the work the State Department did in establishing outposts all over the world for the study of American culture and the promotion of education in the U.S. They were dedicated and professional, and I used them frequently as a resource.

And if we do I hope the voters remember what the corrupt and evil rethuglican
party did to our country when they were given the power to do good or bad. It
will take decades to repair the damage.

You mean portraying ourselves as uneducated xenophobic racists and Christian extremists will put a damper on foreign travel to the US?

Why can't our economy be supported by bible-only educated white-only Americans that work for less that minimum wage in coal mines???

The division he's created is scary. I don't want to be targeted as a Canadian, and I don't want to be in the wrong place at the wrong time with tensions as high as they are. I generally wanted to avoid going there as a personal boycott of Trump. I didn't expect things to get THIS bad though. And it sucks because I had big plans of traveling all around the states with my niece. Now we've turned our roadtripping endeavours to our own country.

And now with US customs asking for your social media passwords and your phone passwords, and copying your data? Fuck that. It's crazy. And that won't just go away. That is going to take years to go back to normal, if it ever does. And I'll tell you right now, my Facebook is nothing but a barrage of Trump rants and shared articles about him and his administration's screw ups. They'd never let me in.

Maybe if the repukes would stop kissing Russian Ass while pissing all over truth, honesty, honor, and American democracy, people would still want to visit the USA as they did under the honorable and widely admired Administration of President Obama.
