My fear about Trump and trade policy

Last edited Fri Feb 24, 2017, 03:52 PM - Edit history (1)

We have been running large trade deficits for decades now, and this results in a loss of production jobs in the US and downward pressure on wages. We need to do something about it, but I am afraid that Trump will raise tariffs or import taxes too much all at once and it will cause a global recession, and then they will say this is what happens when you get protectionist. He has talked about raising tariffs on the Chinese by 30% and imposing a 20% import tax on Mexico. It needs to be done gradually so that businesses have time to adjust. He may not get much of anywhere on it anyway because he has a Republican congress.

Import taxes hurt the poor the most because the less money you have the more of it you spend. DemocratSinceBirth Feb 2017 #1
