Charters not outperforming nation’s traditional public schools, report says

The nation’s public charter schools are growing more effective but most don’t produce better academic results when compared with traditional public schools, according to a report released Tuesday.

Researchers at Stanford University’s Center for Research on Education Outcomes looked at test data from charter schools in 26 states and the District and found that 25 percent of charters outperformed traditional public schools in reading while 29 percent of charters delivered stronger results in math. That marked an improvement over a similar 2009 study by the same research team.

But 56 percent of the charters produced no significant difference in reading and 19 percent had worse results than traditional public schools. In math, 40 percent produced no significant difference and 31 percent were significantly worse than regular public schools.

But critics, many of whom think charters siphon away needed tax dollars from traditional public schools, said the study weakens the case for continued investment.

my wife has taught in are horrible in comparison to public. Mostly down to incompetent administration. But oh boy, do they love to be active around October count.

Charter's. What is really telling,is the resegregation of our Education System. Funny how the use of Charter and Academy are used to hide this segregation.

I was just at a free Chinese Immersion Charter school. In the local public option. you get the standard excellent curriculum and the standard Regents diploma. At this charter, you get Mandarin Chinese immersion classes K-12 and you get to graduate HS with an IB as well as a Regents. Many universities allow you to shorten your time to Bachelors with an IB. Was at Yale and Harvard a few days ago. Admission with an IB allows you to graduate with a Bachelors in 6 semesters or a Bachelors and Masters in 8 semesters. Surprisingly, a lot of students choose to dual major in some pretty divergent subjects rather than get a Masters. Women's Studies and Physics for example.

like the curriculum is more like a private school's, and depending on location, it might be the best route. But I have issues with public funds getting diverted from public to private or for-profit charters.

It's taking money out of the public education. Which is NOT a good thing.
