I have to say this.
When the fucking Gestapo came for my father in law he was in the hospital in Belgium.
The doctors and nurses turned the thugs away by saying the man would die if they took him then. Then when he was a bit better the doctors and nurses gave him false papers and he disappeared into the Underground, where he fought and survived the war.
My people have been in America since about 1630. As I write this, I have tears of utter shame in my eyes for my country.

Author Mem Fox gets U.S. apology after being detained on way to Milwaukee
The Australian author of "Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes" and other children's books has received an apology from U.S. officials after being wrongfully detained at a Los Angeles airport this month on her way to Milwaukee, ABC News reported Friday.
Mem Fox, who was questioned by Customs and Border Protection officers for two hours, said the agents appeared to have been given "turbocharged power" by an executive order signed by President Donald Trump to "humiliate and insult" a room full of people they detained to check visas, the network reported.
Ms. Fox said she collapsed in tears afterward because the questioning was so insulting and aggressive.
And then, of course, there was the ex-wife of Muhammed Ali and Muhammed Ali, Jr., detained and rudely questioned about their religion because they have Muslim names.
Apparently ICE is full of nasty authoritarians who are very excited to be given what amounts to a carte blanche.

(34,382 posts)It's only been 6 weeks--we can't have reached outrage burnout yet--that's how dictators really get their foot in the door when apathy sets in. I keep wondering of she was one of those "really bad guys" what the Orange Shithead was boasting about. Words are so very inadequate to describe the depth of loathing and downright hatred I have for that Orange Horror and the vile toadies he surrounds himself with.
Thank you for sharing the story of your father-in-law. I was watching a WWII documentary a few weeks ago about what life was like inside the Reich. The parallels are alarming. An ordinary Berlin housewife was interviewed, and she shared a story of how a Jewish acquaintance of theirs had asked for their help hiding him and his wife. She was talked out of giving them long term shelter, but she allowed them to stay for 2 days. At the end of the 2 days, she went to where they had been hiding--I can't remember if it was attic or basement. Anyway, all of the bed linens were neatly folded and they were gone. A few weeks later she heard that they had been caught at a train station and had been sent to Auschwitz. She said that the incident had filled her with overwhelming shame because she realized that "Adolf Hitler had turned me into a murderer." She was interviewed in the early 1970's, and the pain and shame was still deeply etched on her face 30 years later. Is this what we're becoming?

(41,977 posts)ICE agents must be United States citizens who are at least 21 years of age and under 37 years of age. The maximum age limit may be waived for US veterans and applicants who have served in certain federal law enforcement positions. ICE agent candidates cannot have been convicted of any felony, nor can they have any conviction for a misdemeanor relating to domestic violence. Applicants who have such criminal records will automatically be denied.
I see a problem here.

(38,311 posts)These people have made my community less safe.
Our local police have worked hard to gain the trust of the local community. Then these ICE "police" costumed clowns come in and blow it all away.
If my neighbors are afraid to talk to the police then I SUFFER. My neighborhood becomes MORE dangerous.

(11,122 posts)the doctors said "Take her. We don't want to get in the way."
The stories I have read seemed to indicate that they were glad to not deal with her.
I guess they are trump fans.
(I will be glad to apologize if I can find anything that says they tried to stop the thugs, but I haven't see it, only that they didn't want to treat her any more.)
