maybe we should ask those we're naming if they have any interest in a run for President. I've seen several names mentioned, but at least a couple of those have said that they have no interest in being President.
Not everyone has the goal of running for President, even if they've been elected to Congress, the Senate or the Governorship of their state. Being President of The United States is a tough, demanding job that isn't for everyone.
Personally, I think it is far too early to start talking about candidates for 2020. Lots of stuff can happen between now and then. I'd prefer to think about people we can get to run for seats in the House and Senate, along with state legislatures and Governor's offices.
But, if you want to propose a presidential ticket, please check with the people you want to name and see if they have any interest whatsoever in running for that office. Most people don't. Al Franken, for example has said that he's not interested, and yet I keep seeing his name.

(Often it was about who was going out for more beer and munchies)
I guess the original poster suggests we contact each person whom we'd kick around as a possible candidate?
I don't think that'd be feasible, in my humble opinion.

Who cares what somebody wants, when you get the call you serve.

(146,288 posts)Actually, a willingness and even an eagerness to run is important. Not everyone can be drafted into running for President. Most people would simply say no to that job. It's a thankless and brutalizing position. I imagine that most Governors, House members and Senators would say, "No, thanks" to a run for President.
So, I care what potential candidates want. I want an enthusiastic candidate who knows what he or she wants to do as President and who can communicate that to voters. I don't want a candidate who has any reluctance to run.

Al Franken knows and he will rule domepieces coast to coast. Yours, mine, ours, and even theirs, domepieces will be ruled.

(24,412 posts)but what's with all of this "we shouldn't talk about this now"? This is a discussion board where people discuss all kinds of things relevant to politics. Not sure why threads where people casually discuss 2020 keep getting shot down or dismissed as "too early" or not Yeah, 2018 is the first stop along the road to stopping Trump (actually, we got some statewide elections coming up this year in some states to be fair), but, seeing as we can all walk and chew gum at the same time, there's no reason NOT to discuss 2020 and who we'd like to see run even if our ideas are entirely fantastical and ludicrous. Whatever we talk about here (or don't) has little to no real-world impact and the DNC isn't going to burst into flames if we start talking about 2020 instead of 2018 (or vice versa) and nobody is going to make their decisions about running in 2020 on the basis of anything we say here on DU. I mean, does the DNC read us?
You're entitled to your opinion, however.
