Among the many reasons: there isn't room. The House Chamber typically accommodates 435 representatives, plus a few non-voting reps. For the SOTU and similar events where the Senate and House meet jointly, they have to make room for over 500 (there are no-shows among the members, but there also needs to be room for some cabinet officials and SCOTUS justices. As you can imagine, there is no way a member could bring a "guest" onto the House floor.

Indeed, the rules for seating at joint sessions are very strict. Members of Congress may reserve their seats in the House Chamber only by physical presence. You can't "save" a seat. As a result, some members have been known to wait hours and hours in order to get a seat on the aisle so that they can shake hands when the President enters and get their faces on TV. If a member gets there early and tries to leave, they sacrifice the seat they had.
