A Republican nation turns its soulless eyes to you
Woo woo woo
Oh the irony is so thick you could cut it with a sickle.
Officially there is a disconnect between the Soviets and "Russia" or at least there was for a time. Now a former KGB black operative is running the show for his rich oligarch friends.
When McCarthy's "Red Scare" was in full force lives and careers were ruined by the slimmest hint of a connection to anything RUSSIAN. These were civilians as well as government, most State Dept., but they tended to be lower level not the heights of power including national security.
We have a Presidential campaign and administration that is directly connected to Russia up down and sideways. An entire political party really. A former US Army General in the role of National Security advisor, the Attorney General of the United States, and the majority leader in the US Senate who covered up or dismissed reports of these direct connections going back to at least September. A President A PRESIDENT with vast business dealings (and probably debt) with Russian elements. Oh and the Attorney General was a sitting US Senator .
And their own press is shooing away every accusation like flies on a turd. In desperation to project the desperation back at the accusers.
The party of the "shining city on the hill", the flagged draped defenders of AMERICA, the party of GOD (against those Godless communists) no less.
Joe would shake his head at them. And it's pretty bad when Joe McCarthy can look down on you from moral grounds.

(31,182 posts)I used to hear references to McCarthyism and think they were too harsh on the old peacenik. I was born in the 60s and had never heard of Joe.
Anyway, excellent post, Underpants.

(58,648 posts)One of Jim Carrey's best, actually. He did some real acting in it.
The culminating scene shows the main character in front of the Congressional committee. I don't know that they actually used McCarthy's name in it, but it spells out the atmosphere in the 50's when McCarthy was at his height.
